Hi @gom3
Welcome to the HP support community.
If you're encountering "Access Denied" errors when trying to use USB thumb drives or external storage on your OMEN by HP laptop, here are some steps to help troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
1. Check Permissions
- Right-click the USB Drive: Select "Properties."
- Go to the Security Tab: Ensure your user account has the necessary permissions (Read, Write). If not, you may need to modify the permissions.
2. Run as Administrator
- If you're trying to access files, right-click the file or folder and select "Run as administrator." This might help if there are permission issues.
3. Check Disk Management
- Open Disk Management: Right-click the Start button and select "Disk Management."
- Locate Your USB Drive: Check if the drive appears and ensure it has a drive letter assigned. If it doesn't, right-click on it and assign a new drive letter.
4. Use a Different USB Port
- Sometimes, the USB port can be the issue. Try connecting the thumb drive or external storage to a different USB port.
5. Test on Another Device
- Connect the USB device to another computer to see if the issue persists. If it works on another device, the problem may be with your laptop.
6. Disable Security Software
- Temporarily disable any antivirus or security software to see if they are causing the access issue. Remember to enable it afterward.
7. Update USB Drivers
- Device Manager: Right-click the Start button and select "Device Manager."
- Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers: Right-click each USB device and select "Update driver."
8. Check for Windows Updates
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and check for updates. Install any available updates.
9. Use the Command Prompt
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator: Search for "cmd," right-click it, and select "Run as administrator."
- Run Disk Check: Type chkdsk E: /f (replace E: with your USB drive letter) and press Enter. This will check for file system errors.
10. Format the USB Drive (if necessary)
Warning: Formatting will erase all data on the USB drive.
- Right-click the USB Drive in Disk Management and select "Format."
- Follow the prompts to format it.
If you still encounter issues after trying these steps, let me know for more detailed assistance!
I hope this helps! Keep me posted.
