web page printing

When I go to print a web page (example a car rental reservation confirmation or an IRS form) the page that prints is really small or cuts off the right side.  The preview panel sometimes shows the page correctly and sometimes shows that it is small or cut off.  I thought it was my printer, but replaced it and same thing.  I have looked at all settings, etc. that I can find (not very inside computer knowledgeable) but can't figure it out.

Much of what you can do depends on the printer / printer software you are using, the browser you are using to view and submit the print job, and your Operating System version.

There are a couple of more obvious settings that might help in the case of a print job that does not "fit on the page" -- No doubt you have found and used "Shrink to fit" (wording varies).  Firefox also provides an additional setting, "Shrink to fit page width".

Examples -- wording may vary:

Firefox > File > [Print] > Print Preview >

Page Set Up  > tab Format & Options > CHECK  Shrink to fit page width

OR

Firefox > File > [Print] > Print Preview >

Scale: > Percentage options OR Shrink to Fit

There are no rules that say a web developer must use certain formats and follow rules to make your printing life easy -- some web content looks great, and then is made to hash by your printing software and printer because the beautiful content cannot be translated onto paper.

What to do? 

• Depending on the format of "the thing that will not print", you might download the document and print it after opening it on your computer.  PDF files sometimes respond well to this strategy.
• Print "hard to print" and "will not print" documents and other web centent as "images".

• Use the Embedded fonts feature so the fonts "stick" in the document
• In Word Options, select to use "fonts that are on the printer":

Thank you Dragon-Fur.  I didn't quite understand the answer but it prompted me to go back through settings again and apparently I must have at one point printed a 5x7 photo and had the paper size setting not on 8x11.  Funny how  you can look at something multiple times and not quite see it.  I reset and things seem to be printing well...wish I hadn't gone out and bought a new printer but I guess I needed it for the future anyway.  Thanks again
