Hi @deneeee,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue you’re experiencing with Windows Update could be caused by a variety of factors, such as corrupted system files, misconfigured update settings, or conflicts with existing updates. Here's a step-by-step guide to help resolve it.

Reset Windows Update Components

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator:
    1. Press Windows + S, type cmd, right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator.
  • Run the following commands one by one:

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver

  • Rename the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folders:

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

  • Restart the services:

net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver

  • Restart your PC and try checking for updates again.

Run DISM and SFC Tools

These tools repair corrupt system files that may prevent updates.

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

  • Wait for the scans to complete, then restart your PC and check for updates.

Use Windows Update Assistant

Check Group Policy or Registry Settings

If your device was previously configured with restrictions:

  • Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter (if available; otherwise skip).
  • Navigate to:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update

  • Ensure policies like "Configure Automatic Updates" are set to Not Configured.

Alternatively, check the registry:

  • Press Windows + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
  • Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

  • Delete any suspicious keys related to updates and restart.

Manually Install Missing Updates

Perform an In-Place Upgrade

If none of the above resolves the issue:

  • Use the Windows 11 ISO to perform an in-place upgrade:
    1. Download the ISO file from the Microsoft website.
    2. Mount the ISO by double-clicking it.
    3. Run setup.exe and choose to keep your files and apps.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
