Envy 23-d027c
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

1st gen Envy 23 (no HDMI port)

My kid hit the screen (touchscreen). It is cracked and not responding well (even with the mouse).  I want to see if I can bypass that by adding a 2nd monitor externally.  Can I use a USB to VGA cable and place the new monitor in front of my all-in-one PC and just work with that for a few months?

Installing a USB to DVI/HDMI/VGA adapter will allow the use of an external monitor.  It should provide an adequate display.  A "USB to VGA cable" probably will not work unless it is active - more than a cable.  I like the Plugable brand as they are very good

You can possibly find cheaper but not better.  Depending on the monitor.  This adapter will work an most any monitor except displayport.

Thanks a lot for your reply. It confirms what I had read on this site before and makes me feel better about purchasing that "active" cable. Happy holidays to you!
