Just a final update:
After waiting 11 days without any response to my support request, I finally rang HP Australia Support on the 12th day. A very big thumbs down to HPA Support on their response performance. The technician I contacted, however, was most responsive and after a few confirmatory tests, he organized for a local service group to replace the touch screen. The new screen was installed promptly and has been running for 24 hours without an issue. It looks like this problem has been sorted out.
