I am trying to connect a second monitor to my desktop (HP Pavillon 590-p0201a). The first monitor is connected via HDMI, when I connect the second monitor via VGA (the only option) both monitors go black. Can I connect the second monitor via VGA?

While I could not find a definite answer as the support of two monitors, it would seem that it should.  The graphics are integrated, which means it is part of the CPU.

First make sure that both HDMI and VGA support the connected monitors one at a time, then look in Display settings.  You can find display settings by right clicking on an empty spot on the desktop, then pick display settings from the popup menu.  Verify that when only one monitor is connected, using the HDMI and VGA ports, that Windows can correctly identify each one separately. In other words - connect each monitor the way it will be used in dual monitor, but only one at a time. After that test,  then locate the multiple monitor tab.  Click on the multiple display tab.  Connect the second monitor and then detect other display.  If you got that far and it sees the second monitor, then set accordingly.

You should be able to connect the second monitor while the PC is running and you are in this display setting.

Please post back to let me know the results of  how this testing turns out.

Hi "TheOldMan",

Thank you for your reply - and so prompt too.

I now have two monitors working from the same desktop.

I followed your "process of elimination" steps, and all is now working. Also, a part of my problem was using a cable with a HDMI plug on one end and a VGA on the other - the monitor couldn't pick up a signal from the HP. Once I went to a VGA-VGA cable everything stared communicating.

Thanks again.
