I have a HP OmniStudio X All-in-One Desktop AI 27-cs0000t PC.   Occasionally, it goes to a black screen with the message that it ran into a problem and needs to restart... showing Bugcode 0X7C or similar.   In Device Manager, the firmware tab shows a triangle with exclamation point and it says the driver cannot be updated.  The rollback feature for the driver also appears disabled.  Anyone have a similar problem?  Any suggestions?  My knowledge of firmware & bios is limited...

Hi @Vent19,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I hear that the exact cause for BUGCODE 0x7C on your HP OmniStudio X All-in-One Desktop AI 27-cs0000t PC is from the provided content.

Based on the HP materials available here, these are the relevant HP-recommended steps you can try for a driver/firmware-related issue shown in Device Manager:

  • Open Device Manager

  • Find the affected device

  • Double-click it and open the Driver tab

  • Select Update Driver and follow the on-screen instructions

  • If a newer driver causes issues, Rollback Driver can be used only when Windows makes that option available; if it is greyed out, rollback is not available for that device at that time

  • HP also recommends checking whether a BIOS update is available, because HP BIOS updates often include fixes for known issues in the BIOS

  • To check the BIOS version, restart the PC, press F10 to enter Setup, note the current BIOS revision, and compare it with the latest BIOS version available from the Official HP® Support.

  • If the issue appears software-related, HP recommends trying Microsoft System Restore before doing broader recovery steps

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for your reply... but still having problems.  When i right click on the Firmware tab (which has the

the exclamation mark, and select properties, i get the following indication.  In the General area

it says "firmware update was unsuccessful" and "This device cannot start (code 10).  When i select the

driver tab, it allows me to try to update the driver, but says i have the most current.  In the Events tab, the following indicated:  on 5/6 Device configured, OEM 126.inf.  On second line:  Device not started.

Not sure what next... should i run DISM & SFC scans as one site suggested?

Thank you for sharing the details.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting:

1. Check Device Manager:

Open Device Manager → expand Firmware.

Right-click the device with the exclamation mark → Uninstall device.

Restart your PC. Windows may reinstall the firmware automatically.

2. Run DISM & SFC:

These scans repair corrupted system files that can block firmware updates:

Open Command Prompt (Admin).

Run:

Code

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth sfc /scannow

Restart after completion.

3. Update via OEM Tool:

It provide their own BIOS/firmware update utilities.

Download the latest firmware directly from the Official HP® Support.

Run the OEM tool instead of relying on Windows Update.

4. Check Windows Update History:

Go to Settings → Windows Update → Update history.

Look for failed firmware updates and note the error code.

If repeated failures occur, manually download the update from your OEM.

5. Free Up Disk Space:

Ensure at least 10–15% free space on your system drive.

Low space can prevent firmware updates from applying correctly.

Thanks for you advice, Jerry.  I'm trying...  I uninstalled the firmware and restarted... as it came up, it said i needed to restart again... and again... each time it said to restart to finish updating... but after 3 or 4 times, i figured it wasn't going to happen.  Ran DISM, and it ran successfully.  Ran SFC scan and after a restart, i did a "check health" DISM command, and it said everything was ok.  It is a fairly new computer and there should be plenty of disk space on it... i haven't done any heavy loads.  I checked the windows update history, and so no failures with the updates, including driver updates.  The only thing i haven't tried is the OEM tool.  So far everything i have done has not changed the firmware triangle/exclamation point and the computer still occasionally has a problem and needs a restart as originally noted.  I may try the OEM tool tomorrow... but after that?

Hi @Vent19,

Thank you for sharing the details.

Kindly follow the steps below and check:

1. Download HP Support Assistant:

HP’s Support Assistant can detect and repair firmware driver issues automatically.

Install from HP’s official site: HP Support Assistant → Updates → Check for updates HP Support Assistant | HP® Support

Run the tool and let it scan for firmware/BIOS updates

Apply all recommended updates

Restart after installation

2. Manually Update BIOS/Firmware:

If Support Assistant doesn’t fix it, manually install the latest BIOS.

Go to Official HP® Support → Drivers & Software → BIOS/Firmware

Identify your exact model (HP OmniStudio X 27-cs0000t)

Download the latest BIOS/firmware package

Run the installer as Administrator

Restart and confirm Device Manager no longer shows a warning

3. Reset Firmware Settings:

Corrupted firmware settings can cause repeated restart loops.

Restart → Press Esc/F10 to enter BIOS Setup

Load Default Settings in BIOS

Save and exit

Reboot into Windows

4. Check Windows Update History:

Ensure no pending updates are stuck.

Go to Settings → Windows Update → Update history

Confirm no failed firmware/driver updates

If failures exist, uninstall/reinstall the update manually

5. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics:

This tool checks hardware integrity beyond Windows utilities.

Download HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) HP PC Hardware Diagnostics | HP® Support

Boot into diagnostics from startup menu

Run full system test

If hardware passes, issue is software/firmware

If hardware fails, contact HP warranty support

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

Well Jerry... i have tried a lot of things... but nothing seems to work.  I updated the Bios from F.o6 to F.o7  yesterday and it updated successfully.  Firmware tab in Device Manager still indicated the same problem and the computer later restarted as before.  I ran the hardware diagnostics UEFI and when it got to the point of restarting to finish the action, the computer didn't come back up... so i had to manually shut down... wait a few minutes and then turn it back on to bring it up.  No error messages showed up.  It was like the computer just ignored the hardware test.  So... back to square one, i guess.  Sigh.  You are a good person to have stuck with this problem so long... thank  you.

Hi Jerry... sorry for the delay (family stuff)... i followed the link you sent to the software recovery options, but not sure which option i should use or how it will affect my computer (will i lose anything?).  Could you possibly suggest a specific path?  Sorry... but i am not the most computer educated person... so i try to follow advice from those who know... until i reach an uncertainty.  Thanks so much for your help.
