E24d G4 FHD USB-C Docking Monitor
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi All,

I have a Lenovo laptop T480 and a Lenovo monitor for my home office set up. The monitor only has HDMI and VGA type connectors. Now I have bought an E24d G4 FHD USB-C Docking Monitor and I want to use my Lenovo monitor as an extended display monitor. My laptop only has 1 USB-C port and an HDMI port. It does not have a DisplayPort-port. I have tried the set ups below without success:

1. Connect the HP docking monitor to laptop via USB-C and the Lenovo monitor directly to laptop via HDMI. With this option, HP docking monitor takes over and Lenovo goes off (no input signal).

2. Bought an HDMI -> DisplayPort adaptor and connected the Lenovo monitor to the DisplayPort out on the HP docking monitor. With this option, nothing happens as well.

Option x: The option that I have been avoiding - for fear of it failing as well is as follows:

Buy a USB-C Hub which can take the HP Docking monitor via USB-C port (I want this so that I can still use the camera on the HP Docking monitor). The Hub must also have an HDMI port for my Lenovo monitor. I would connect the hub to the laptop via USB-C and still charge the laptop. I don't mind moving my USB keyboard and mouse from the HP Docking monitor to the new hub but I really wanted to keep using the camera on the HP docking monitor.

Question 1: Is there a way that I can make options 1 and 2 work without buying anything more?

Question 2: Does Option x work, i.e. shoe-horning a USB-C hub in between laptop and docking monitor and connect Lenovo monitor on to the hub.

Question 3: Is there any other option I can try?

Thanks in advance.

Hello

the configuration you did  "Bought an HDMI -> DisplayPort adaptor and connected the Lenovo monitor to the DisplayPort out on the HP docking monitor. With this option, nothing happens as well" should work.

also this should  work "Connect the HP docking monitor to laptop via USB-C and the Lenovo monitor directly to laptop via HDMI. "

how old is  your Lenovo T480 ? which graphics card is in use ?

what happens if you try to use the external monitor with notebook lid closed ?

bye

Thank you for the response. I have now gotten it to work. The limitation is on the laptop side. Both the options you gave below should work as you have suggested.

My T480s is now 3 years old. Apparently, it has another USB-C port just beside the USB-C port that is obviously visible for charging the laptop. Once I moved the HP Docking monitor on to that port, my HDMI connection for the Lenovo monitor then woke up.
