My monitor seems to not be picking up a signal from my computer. I get a black screen that says “DVI- NO SIGNAL, VGA- NO SIGNAL, Auto- Switch Source: ON, Default Source- DVI, Recommended Settings- 1600x900-60Hz”

Then, after about 5 seconds it goes to a black screen with the message “Monitor going to sleep” & after 2 seconds the monitor is off again.

I've had this computer for years and I've never had thus issue with it and not been able to fix it.

Dell Optiplex 780 computer with HP Compaq LA2205wg monitor.

Is there a way to fix this myself (I do not have access to another desktop, only laptops) or do I need to have this repaired?

What is your HP machine ? It may have dedicated video card therefore two ports on motherboard are disabled.
