I am trying to disable the function keys on my Omen PC. I do not want the F1 and F2 keys to adjust the brightness. I cannot use these keys while gaming as they revert to the function abilities and do not let me use them as they are supposed to in video games anymore. I keep seeing people say this can be changed in BIOS however I do not see this ability anywhere? This was never an issue until today, and I am unsure of how this change even happened as I haven't changed this manually on my end.

Hi @rqchqel,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To disable the default "Function (Fn) keys behavior" on your HP Omen PC, you can follow these steps. This will allow you to use the F1, F2, etc., keys as standard function keys in games without triggering system actions like brightness adjustment.
Check for the Fn Key Lock Option
- On most HP laptops, you can toggle the Fn key behavior directly using the Fn lock.
- Look for an Fn key on your keyboard (usually near the bottom-left).
- Press Fn + Esc together to toggle the Fn lock.
- If the Fn lock is enabled, the F1-F12 keys should function as standard keys without requiring you to press Fn.
Adjust Keyboard Settings in BIOS/UEFI
If the above method doesn’t work, you might need to modify the settings in your PC's BIOS/UEFI:
- Restart your computer and press the Esc key repeatedly during startup to access the Startup Menu.
- Select BIOS Setup (F10) from the menu.
- In the BIOS menu, look for an option like System Configuration, Keyboard Settings, or Action Key Mode (names may vary).
- Disable Action Key Mode or a similar option. This will make the function keys behave like standard F1-F12 keys by default.
- Save the changes and exit the BIOS.
Use HP Omen Command Center
Some HP Omen PCs allow you to customize keyboard behavior using the HP Omen Command Center:
- Open the HP Omen Command Center app.
- Navigate to the Keyboard or Performance section.
- Look for options related to the function keys or key customization.
- Adjust the settings to disable system functions for F1, F2, etc.
Update or Roll Back Recent Changes
Since you mentioned the issue started recently:
- Check if any updates (Windows, HP software, or BIOS) were installed recently that might have altered this behavior.
- Roll back the recent update or restore system settings to a point before the issue occurred using System Restore if necessary.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
