The problem was that the cable which I purchased was HDMI to VGA (i.e., it assumed HDMI out on my PC).   I acquired an VGA to HDMI adapter which worked.  VGA to HDMI requires an adapter which converts the analog signal (coming from the PC VGA port) to digital for the monitor (actually a TV).

Well generally the cables that convert signal are not the best solution. I suggest to try a simple cable vga to vga and check what happens. If you are not able to use vga to vga cable try a better quality hdmi to vga. Are the monitors with the same resolution ?

Are the same inch dimensions?
