I am trying to set up a (newly purchased) E190i monitor to replace a failing vs19e as an AlphaServer 1000a console. [I have had many different monitors connect to the AS with no trouble. L1940T, various CRTs...] The E190i says "no signal". I described the issue in various forums, and the consensus is that the problem is that the VGA card's settings (at least H & V scan rates and maybe resolution) don't match any of the FIVE options that the E190i can handle automatically. The E190i User Guide claims that one can define his/her own parameters and save up to (and including) 10 such settings. But, I can't find anything in the manual or in any of the E190i menu items for making any custom settings. I tried the HP Support web site, but it claims that the Product ID (E4U30A) is invalid, and won't let me do ANYTHING without a valid PID. [The HP web site has a LOT of links to pages that don't exist, by the way...] I checked the menu of the (working) vs19e, and it appears that "Current Settings" includes 77KHz for H, and 72Hz for V. [It shows nothing for current resolution and "1280x1024-60Hz" under "Recommended Settings". -I don't think that the vs19e resolution display means much because this monitor has no trouble working with the AS1000a.] I bought two E190i monitors; neither works with the AS1000a. I moved one to a PC running Linux, and it works fine. I changed the VGA cable, and no difference.
How do I add a custom setting to the E190i (or did the manual make a false claim as to product capabilities)? If it isn't possible to make the E190i work with anything but the five presets, do I have to look for refurbushed or used older monitors (and avoid anything recent by HP)?
