Hello,
I went to turn on my computer today but what’s weird is when I turned it on the screen kinda froze, I was able to turn it on and log in, but once I got it it semi-froze after a couple minutes, none of the apps had a selection box, I couldn't type, the only thing that worked was hitting the windows button.
Hope someone can help!!

Hi @Me8000
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your computer's screen is freezing after startup, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:
1. Restart Your Computer:
- Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary glitches. Hold down the power button until the computer shuts off, then turn it back on.
2. Boot in Safe Mode:
- Boot your computer in Safe Mode to see if the issue persists. This will load only the essential drivers.
- To access Safe Mode:
- Restart your computer and as it boots up, repeatedly press F8 (or Shift + F8 for some systems) until you see the boot options.
- Select Safe Mode from the list.
3. Check for Software Conflicts:
- In Safe Mode, check for any recently installed software or updates that might be causing the issue. Uninstall any suspicious programs or updates.
4. Update Drivers:
- Outdated or corrupted drivers can cause freezing issues. In Safe Mode:
- Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Expand the categories (especially Display adapters) and update any drivers that have a warning symbol or are outdated.
5. Run System Checks:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator (right-click the Start button and select Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin)).
- Run the following commands:
- sfc /scannow (This checks for and repairs corrupted system files.)
- chkdsk /f (This checks your disk for errors; you may need to restart your computer for this to run.)
6. Check for Malware:
- Run a full scan using Windows Defender or any other trusted antivirus software to rule out malware that might be causing the issue.
7. System Restore:
- If the problem started recently, you can perform a System Restore to revert your computer back to a previous state when it was functioning properly.
- Search for System Restore in the Start menu and follow the prompts.
8. Check Hardware:
- If none of the above works, it may be a hardware issue. Check for:
- Loose connections (RAM, hard drive).
- Overheating components (ensure fans are working and vents are clear).
- Faulty peripherals (try disconnecting all USB devices and peripherals).
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
