When using my desktop as an external display for either my ps4 or laptop, the display is very dim on the desktop and there seems to be no way to change the brightness, any solutions?

If your HP Envy AIO 27 display appears dim when using the HDMI input, here are some steps to troubleshoot and improve the brightness.

 

Check Display Mode Settings:

  • On many all-in-one (AIO) PCs, the HDMI input brightness is set differently from the standard display mode. Look for any on-screen display (OSD) menu or dedicated button to toggle between display modes (e.g., "PC mode" vs. "HDMI mode").
  • Make sure you’re selecting the correct mode for external input, as sometimes "Eco Mode" or "Low Power Mode" can cause dimness.

Adjust Brightness Settings via OSD (On-Screen Display):

  • If your AIO model has physical buttons or a touch interface that brings up an OSD menu when connected to an HDMI source, use this to increase the brightness.
  • Not all models allow brightness control via HDMI input, but it’s worth checking the settings to see if there’s an adjustment.

Disable Adaptive Brightness:

  • Check in the Windows settings under Settings > System > Display. Ensure adaptive brightness or any power-saving mode isn’t impacting the external display settings. Although this typically affects the internal display, it can sometimes influence HDMI input on certain AIO models.

Connect to a Different HDMI Source:

  • If possible, try connecting another HDMI device (like a different laptop or console) to rule out any issues with the initial HDMI source.

Update Graphics Drivers and BIOS:

  • Sometimes, driver or firmware updates can resolve HDMI-related brightness issues. Update your graphics drivers and BIOS via HP Support Assistant or the HP website to ensure compatibility with external displays.


If none of these steps resolve the issue, it’s possible that this model may have limited brightness controls for HDMI inputs, and an external monitor may be a better option for HDMI-based display needs.
