HP Pro Tower 400 G9 PCI i7 - Intel UHD Graphics 770 - Windows 11 Pro

Hello,
My desktop mentioned above has a DisplayPort and an HDMI port, I have 2 screens 27" with resolution 2560x1440, with the DisplayPort there is no problem and I can set the screen to 2560x1440 resolution. The HDMI port gives a maximum resolution of 1920x1080, I have already tried many things to solve the problem. With my 11 year old Z230 workstation it all worked fine with the 2560x1440 resolution, but it is time to replace it.
Does anyone have a solution for this HDMI port.
Thanks.

You are right and it is a bit of a shame that the HDMI port for a modern Desktop PC has such a low resolution. But luckily I still have an AMD Radeon RX 550 video card in a drawer and I have now placed it in the system and I have a good resolution for both 27" screens now.
Thank you all.

Note: You need to disable DMA protection in the BIOS for this, otherwise the additional GPU will not be accepted by the system.

Which of these 400 G6 do you have?

https://support.hp.com/us-en/deviceSearch?q=400%20G6&origin=pdp

If all you have is Intel I7 for graphics then you probably have the 630 graphics subsystem.

The Intel UHD Graphics 630 supports the following resolutions:

  • DP4096 x 2304 @ 60 Hz, 24 bpp
  • USB type-C Alt mode4096 x 2304 @ 60 Hz
  • VGA1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz
  • HDMI2.04096 x 2160 @ 60 Hz

The above is the maximum for a single monitor. For dual monitors there may be a bandwidth problem.

If you use only the HDMI can you obtain the 2560x1440 ?  If that fails then the motherboard does not support UHD over HDMI 1.2 except at 30hz  as shown in this table

If it works then try connecting both monitors an set the refresh to 30hz instead of 60.

I do not know your HDMI spec but the 2560 cannot be used on HDMI 1.1 (or 1.2 except at 30hz.)

Thanks,

It is a 400 G9 instead of 400 G6 with a Intel UHD Graphics 770

Thank you for mentioning this.  I looked up DMA protection and read about it here

I was unaware of the possibilities of external devices accessing memory in such a fashion.

The typical GPU such as RX-550 or  any of the GTX RTX  from NVidia would not cause any problems unless the firmware in the GPU was hacked.  Just my 0.2c opinion.

HP is removing cloud or client recovery for system over 5 years old. You may want to get a copy of the cloud recovery before it is too late.

Go here and enter your product ID,. select software and download and run the the client recovery app.

In this case it was necessary to disable DMA in the BIOS because otherwise the Desktop would not boot. I removed the AMD GPU from an older Dell Optiplex system where it was no longer needed and now has a new life in a new HP Prodesk i7.
