HP 27ES
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an HP 27ES monitor connected to an HP p6230f computer running Windows 10.  Windows is up to date. It had been working fine but now will not run at full resolution. The monitor is connected via an HDMI cable. Windows has the driver as a Microsoft generic PnP monitor. I tried downloading and installing the current HP driver from the support website but MS says the generic driver is best and won't install it.

The issue may have started after an MS update in July or August. I left it hoping a subsequent update would fix it.

The display adapter is an ATI Radeon HD 4200 and the driver last updated July 25 to version 22.19.128.0. The Events tab for this device has:  "Device PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9710&SUBSYS_2A92103C&REV_00\4&456635&0&2808 requires further installation."

I reviewed your post and I understand that you are having issues with the display resolution on your monitor.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

Awesome job on diagnosing the issue correctly and performing smart troubleshooting before posting your question on HP forums. Kudos to you on that score.

I recommend you uninstall the graphics driver from device manager and then download and install the driver from the below link and check.

Here is how it is done.

Uninstall:

  1. Start Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound, and then click Device Manager.
  2. Expand the node that represents the type of device that you want to uninstall, right-click the device entry, and click Uninstall.
  3. On the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click OK to start the uninstall process.
  4. When the uninstall process is complete, remove the device.

NOTE: On the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click the Delete the driver software for this device option to delete the driver package that was used for the device.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Sorry for the delay, wasn't brave enough to do this while traveling.

I was able to get the monitor drive away from the generic to the H 27es driver. A bit of an improvement, but not much. The display adapter (AMD Radeon HD4200) still is showing a generic MS driver.

When I try to install the AMD supplied display adapter driver the system reports it is not supported.

One odd item is that if I pop open the display of all resolutions available, they all say 64Hz. The 1920x1080 for the 27es is not on the list. Best I can get is 1400x1050.

The system is also not handling 2 displays properly. One is on the DVI connector and the other on the VGA connector.  They come up as mirrored. The device manager only shows one device and the detect function reports that it can not detect a second device.

This system used to work, 2 monitors, proper resolutions.

Problem Solved: Replaced the built-in AMD Radeon display adapter with a Nvidia one that wasn't being used.
