Hey all! I have an HP Pavillion All-in-One desktop 24-ca1 and I am struggling to get a feature back.

Two weeks ago I had an option in the settings to turn the AIO desktop into an external monitor. I used this to hook it up to my work laptop to get a second screen and as the screen for my Nintendo switch. It looks like that option has disappeared and I'm not sure where it could have gone to or how to restore it. I really need a second monitor for work and now don't have a way to play my switch on a screen. Was there any update or something? Does anyone know how to direct me to the settings to get that option back?

@melmelmelmelmel, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're having trouble using your HP Pavilion All-in-One 24-ca1 as an external monitor via the HDMI-in port, a feature that previously worked but now seems to have disappeared. Let's walk through how to restore or troubleshoot this functionality.

Check for HDMI-In Button or Hotkey

Many HP AIOs with HDMI-in functionality require you to manually switch the input source using a physical button or on-screen menu.

  • Look for a button on the bottom or side of the monitor labeled something like "HDMI", "Input", or with a monitor icon.
  • Press and hold this button for a few seconds to toggle to HDMI input mode.
  • If your model supports it, this should switch the display to the connected device (e.g., your laptop or Nintendo Switch).

Try the On-Screen Display (OSD) Menu

If there's no physical button:

  • Move your mouse to the bottom-right corner of the screen or use the touchscreen to bring up the OSD menu.
  • Look for an Input Source or HDMI-in option and select it.

Power Cycle All Devices

Sometimes a simple reset helps:

  • Turn off your AIO and the connected device (laptop or Switch).
  • Unplug both from power for 1–2 minutes.
  • Reconnect and power them on, then try switching to HDMI-in again.

Test with Another HDMI Cable or Device

  • Try a different HDMI cable to rule out a faulty one.
  • Test with another device (e.g., a DVD player or another laptop) to confirm the HDMI-in port is working.

Check for Windows or HP Updates

A recent update may have affected the feature:

  • Go to Settings > Windows Update and install any pending updates.
  • Also, visit the HP Support site for your model and update the BIOS, graphics drivers, and HP Quick Launch Buttons if available.

Restore Missing HDMI-In Option

If the HDMI-in option is missing due to a software glitch:

  • Try performing a System Restore to a point when the feature was working:
    • Go to Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore.
    • Choose a restore point from before the issue began.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
