OMEN Transcend 31.5 inch UHD 240Hz OLED Gaming Monitor - OMEN Transcend 32
Microsoft Windows 11

I've heard this happening for others too but wanted to check if this fix is a priority for HP. I see two scenarios where this happens.

The first appears to be how Windows handles power saver mode for external devices. My fix involved going to: Device Manger (app) > Universal Serial Bus controllers, then opening the Power Management of the USB hub and turning off this option: Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

The second is related to wired mice connected to the monitor's USB hub. I recall there was a rather infamous issue at launch where double clicking a mouse would sometimes toggle the KVM. It seems there are still issues because anytime my wired mouse is connected the display completely goes dark and disables all attached USB devices.

All of this happens on the most recent firmware version.

Given the price of the monitor, I expected better default behavior. Thankfully using a wireless mouse and updating the above mentioned settings in device manager was the trick, but a $1300 monitor shouldn't need to be cradled!

Hi @geowt

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're encountering some frustrating issues with the HP Omen Transcend 32 USB Hub, and I can understand your frustration considering the price of the monitor. These issues with the USB hub and the KVM switching behavior (especially with the wired mouse) aren't uncommon, but they do seem to stem from a mix of software/firmware quirks and power management settings.

Possible Causes of the Issue

Power Management Settings for USB Devices: As you've noted, Windows' power-saving feature is often responsible for disconnecting or resetting external devices like your USB hub. The "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option can cause these random resets. Your fix of disabling this feature in Device Manager is exactly what should be done to prevent Windows from shutting off devices unnecessarily.

KVM Switching with Wired Mouse: The issue with the wired mouse causing the display to go dark and disabling USB devices is related to the KVM (keyboard-video-mouse) functionality, where switching between devices might be triggered unexpectedly by actions like double-clicking the mouse. This might be a bug that stems from the initial firmware, and the fact that it persists even with the latest firmware suggests that the issue might not have been fully resolved by HP yet.

Possible Fixes and Workarounds

Here are a few suggestions you can try to further mitigate or resolve the issues you're facing:

1. Update All Drivers and Firmware

Ensure that all drivers, including USB drivers and monitor firmware, are up-to-date. Sometimes, bugs like this can be patched out in newer releases:

  • Check for monitor firmware updates: Visit the official HP Omen or HP Support website to see if there are any firmware updates available that might address the USB reset and KVM toggle issues.
  • Update USB drivers: Update the USB drivers and the chipset drivers for your laptop/PC, especially if you're connecting the monitor through USB. You can usually find these drivers through your system's manufacturer or on the Intel or AMD websites (depending on your system).
  • Windows Update: Ensure that your Windows 10/11 OS is fully updated as well.

2. Disable USB Selective Suspend in Windows

In addition to the specific setting you changed in Device Manager, there is another power-saving setting in Windows that could cause similar behavior:

  1. Open Control Panel and go to Power Options.
  2. Select Change plan settings next to your active power plan.
  3. Click on Change advanced power settings.
  4. Scroll down to USB settings and expand it.
  5. Disable USB selective suspend setting for both battery and plugged in options.

This may help prevent Windows from turning off USB hubs, which might also help mitigate the resetting issue.

3. Test the Monitor's USB Hub with Other Devices

To isolate whether the issue is specific to the wired mouse or the monitor's USB hub:

  • Try connecting different USB devices (other wired peripherals) to the monitor’s USB hub and check if the issue persists.
  • If the issue only happens with the wired mouse, this could indicate a problem with the mouse's interaction with the KVM switch on the monitor. In this case, switching to a wireless mouse (as you've already done) would be a good workaround.

I hope this helps.
