I have a similar issue: I'm working on the computer when the screen goes off. Then a message about checking the HDMI cable displays for a few seconds and then the monotor goes dark. I have no HDMI cable attached.
Sometimes, the computer recovers. Just now I had to turn it off and fortunately it booted up as normal.

Hi @JoeBoatman,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're seeing a "Check HDMI cable" message on your HP Pavilion 24 all-in-one computer, it generally indicates that there might be an issue with the HDMI connection between your computer and an external display or device. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
Check the HDMI Cable Connections:
- Make sure the HDMI cable is securely connected to both your HP Pavilion 24 and the external device (such as a monitor, TV, or projector).
- Ensure that both ends of the HDMI cable are properly plugged in.
Try a Different HDMI Port:
- If your HP Pavilion 24 has multiple HDMI ports, try connecting the cable to a different port to see if the issue is specific to one port.
Test with a Different Cable:
- The HDMI cable itself could be faulty. Try using a different HDMI cable to see if that resolves the issue.
Check the External Display:
- If you're connecting to a monitor or TV, make sure it's turned on and set to the correct input source (HDMI).
Restart the Devices:
- Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve connection issues. Turn off both your HP Pavilion 24 and the external display, then turn them back on.
Update Graphics Drivers:
- Outdated or incompatible graphics drivers could cause display issues. Make sure your graphics drivers are up to date. You can usually find the latest drivers on HP's official website.
Check Display Settings:
- In your computer's display settings, make sure the correct display mode and resolution are selected.
Inspect for Physical Damage:
- Inspect both the HDMI ports on your HP Pavilion 24 and the external device for any physical damage or debris that might be blocking proper connectivity.
Try a Different Device:
- If possible, try connecting your HP Pavilion 24 to a different external device (like a different monitor or TV) to see if the issue is specific to one device.
Hardware or Software Issue:
- If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it's possible that there might be a hardware problem with either the HDMI port on your computer or the external device.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
