HP Slim 290-p0000 Desktop PC (2RB11AV)

Why isn't a win11 desktop Device Manager recognizing a new graphics card from AMD? The PC is from around 2018 and the graphics card was luanched in 2017. Device Manager never shows any new graphic cards device, no hidden device either.

what I tried:
1. BIOS is up to date, April 2023.
2. Windows updates, and optional, up to date
3. HP UEFI system (ran from pressing F2 on bootup) tests all passed, this took 13 hours to run.
4. However, the "Fast System Test" run from within Windows11 HP Support Diagnostics tool, seems to "cancelled" when getting to the "Video Memory Fast Check (Microsoft Basic Adapter)." I've tried rebooting several times, same issue. (SCREENSHOT attached)

my setup:
Radeon RX 550 LP Graphics Card, Low Profile 4GB GDDR5 graphics card says 300w recommended power supply, but min is 180 watt. I opened my case and the fan is spinning, so it is getting power.
HP slimline bought new from Microcenter in 2019.

https://support.hp.com/bg-en/document/c05991290 -  motherboard specs, though my HP desktop was bought "refurbished" in 2018

odd things:
1. from HP's website, specification: NOTE: Integrated video is not available if a graphics card is installed. (what does this mean? Do I need to disable integrated to get the PCIex16 graphics card to work?)

2. why is the diagnostic video test going to cancelled without running?

Thank you,
Mike

Hi, Mike:

It seems to me that you have to install the RX 550 graphics driver.

Hello Paul, Thank you! Unfortunately, no cigar. The .exe driver install runs, but they both stop with an error saying, "Error 173 – AMD Software Installer Cannot Proceed as No AMD Graphics Hardware Has Been Detected in Your System." And, there seem to be no "Error codes in Device Manager in Windows" that I see. A few commented that this Graphics card is working on their 180watt pwr supply in their desktop in Win11. oh well, maybe it's just my setup.

extra note on my setup: New windows 11 is installed on a m.2 ssd bought and installed in 2023. My hard-disk-drive (original 1TB that came with desktop) is just storage now. My hard disk drive is labeled by Windows11 as disk0. I mention this in case somehow I need Windows11 to be installed on disk0. Does disk0 and disk1 play a part in this? I think I'll just try to reinstall Win11 freshly on the ssd drive and see if it cleans up things.

You're very welcome.

Sorry, that installing the driver didn't work for you.

Please post the hardware ID for the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter so I can figure out what driverless model graphics adapter is being listed there.

Use this guide for how to find the hardware ID for a device.

How to Find Drivers for Unknown Devices in the Device Manager (howtogeek.com)

I was assuming it was the Radeon RX 550 graphics card in need of a driver.

Question...before you installed the card, did you first uninstall the onboard graphics adapter and driver in the device manager?

Sometimes not doing that before shutting down the PC and installing the new card fouls things up because the old drivers are still installed.

HP Recommended

did you first uninstall the onboard graphics adapter and driver in the device manager? ---- No.
For the hardware IDs, I'm a bit ignorant of security, posting "pii" for hardware....etc. If I have the hardware ID's, what do I do then?

Not installing the onboard graphics adapter and driver in the device manager could be the cause of your dilemma.

You can copy and paste the hardware ID to your reply.

This is what mine looks like for the Nvidia GT 1030 graphics card:

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1D01&SUBSYS_63353842&REV_A1
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1D01&SUBSYS_63353842

trying other ideas, no avail.

bcdedit /?
bcdedit /enum

bcdedit /v /set usefirmwarepcisettings yes
bcdedit /v /set usefirmwarepcisettings no
bcdedit /v /set novga on
bcdedit /v /set novga off
Bcdedit /set pciexpress forcedisable

After each cmd, DOS said, cmd executed successfully, but /v didn't show any verbose extra notes, like I was expecting.
And after each cmd, I rebooted, to see if Device Manger would show the graphics card, but still no cigar.

OK:

For some reason or another, The PC/Windows is not picking up the Radeon RX 550 LP Graphics card you installed.

The hardware ID you posted is for the onboard Intel graphics adapter.

I suggest if you have not done so already would be to shut down and unplug the PC, remove the Radeon RX 550 graphics card.

Connect the monitor cable to the onboard graphics port.

Restart the PC and let Windows install the drivers for the Intel HD graphics adapter.

Once that is done, uninstall the Intel HD graphics adapter and check the uninstall driver box.

Shut down the PC, unplug it, reinstall the Radeon RX 550 graphics card, switch the monitor cable back to the AMD card's video output, and see if it gets picked up this time.

The card has a power draw of 50 Watts--an above average load on the 180 W power supply but it should be working with no problem.

Thanks for the help, but no cigar. I did not see any checkbox to check when uninstalling the Microsoft (Intel) display adapter from Device Manager. I've never actually plugged a cable into this new graphics card, but I did during these steps just in case, tried DisplayPort cable and HDMI, no luck.

And, I (reset PC) reinstalled, while connected to the internet, windows, and a fresh win11 doesn't see it. I did hear some fans noise spinning up (and off like) routinely during the last 80% of the win11 reinstall, that offered hope of detection.

My main focus I think will be that the HP diagnostic tools still "cancelled" at the Video Memory test. Perhaps there is something faulty in the hardware. (the "see description just says the system will check video....etc")

Video memory fast check cancelledVideo memory fast check cancelled

I think I will return the graphics card. this is the 2nd graphics card from Amazon I tried, first, was it being used, I thought maybe that was its problem. oh well.
