I’m experiencing a screen flickering issue on my laptop, and I was wondering if you might have any suggestions or solutions.
It's happening from last few days. Sometimes the laptop is working fine but suddenly the screen starts to flicker. I haven't installed any software recently.

Hi @Shubhi4 ,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

Several factors can cause your laptop screen to flicker:

1. Incompatible applications

Some applications may conflict with your system’s display settings, causing screen flickering. To determine if this is the case:

Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Alt + Del)

Observe if the flickering continues while Task Manager is open

If everything except Task Manager flickers, an incompatible app is likely the culprit

2. Outdated display drivers

Outdated or corrupted display drivers are a common cause of screen flickering. Keeping your driver software up-to-date is crucial for optimal performance.

3. Loose or damaged internal connections

Physical damage or loose internal connections can cause screen flickering, especially if the issue occurs when you move your laptop screen. Examining the display cable can help determine if it needs to be replaced or serviced.

4. Refresh rate issues

An incorrect refresh rate setting, particularly when using an external monitor, can cause what appears to be screen flickering.

5. Hardware problems

In some cases, hardware issues such as a failing graphics card or damaged screen can cause flickering. Additionally, a failing graphics driver can also cause flickering and should be checked.

Hi @Shubhi4 ,

Try these solutions to resolve your laptop’s screen flickering:

1. Update your display driver

Updating your display driver can often resolve flickering issues:

  1. Boot your PC in Safe Mode
  2. Open Device Manager, locate your display adapter and uninstall the device
  3. Restart your PC
  4. Let Windows automatically install the latest driver, or manually download and install it

2. Check for Windows updates

Ensure your Windows operating system is up-to-date:

  1. Go to Settings > Update & Security
  2. Click “Check for updates”
  3. Install any available updates

3. Adjust the refresh rate

If you’re using an external monitor, try adjusting the screen refresh rate to enhance display stability and resolve flickering issues:

  1. Right-click on your desktop and select “Display settings”
  2. Scroll down and click “Advanced display settings”
  3. Click “Display adapter properties”
  4. Go to the “Monitor” tab and adjust the refresh rate

4. Disable Windows Desktop Manager

In some cases, disabling Windows Desktop Manager can help:

  1. Press Windows key + R, type “services.msc” and press Enter
  2. Find “Desktop Window Manager Session Manager”
  3. Right-click and select “Stop”
  4. Set the Startup type to “Disabled”

5. Check for loose connections

If you’re comfortable opening your laptop, check for loose internal connections. If not, it’s best to consult a professional technician.

6. Run the Windows troubleshooter

Windows has a built-in troubleshooter that can help identify and troubleshoot screen flickering issues:

  1. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot
  2. Select “Display quality” and run the troubleshooter

7. Perform a clean boot

A clean boot can help identify if a third-party application is causing the issue when the laptop screen starts flickering:

  1. Press Windows key + R, type “msconfig” and press Enter
  2. Go to the “Services” tab
  3. Check “Hide all Microsoft services”
  4. Click “Disable all”
  5. Go to the “Startup” tab and click “Open Task Manager”
  6. Disable all startup items
  7. Restart your computer

If the flickering stops after a clean boot, gradually re-enable services and startup items to identify the problematic application.

If you’ve tried these solutions and your laptop screen continues to flicker, it may be time to service the unit.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

I have tried solution 1 the screen flickers along with task manager. For solution 2 i have updated drivers also. For solution 3 I can not determine the loose or damaged internal connections by myself. For solution 4 i do not use any kind of external monitor nor my laptop is a gaming laptop and for solution 5 i can not determine hardware issues by myself.
Most of the time my screen flickers when the laptop is somewhat heated even when it is not heated then also sometimes the screen flickers. My warranty expired a long time ago and i don't know what to do in this case. As i am still a student i can not afford higher charge for repairing my laptop. Can you tell me some measures regarding this.
