HP Envy 27-p010xt AIO
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Some time ago I had to reinstall Windows 10 which has continued to work well but I notice that the AMD Radeon R7 A365 video adapter is no longer connected although I reinstalled the drivers from the HP website.  The Device manager shows both that and an Intel 530 adapter installed and says both are working but the computer is connected to the Intel adapter and I can find no way to change this. The BIOS has no setting for changing video adapters. I tried disabling the Intel adapter in Device Manager but on reboot it showed connection to the basic Microsoft video adapter and would not even recognize my second display. On re-enabling the Intel Adapter, video is working again but I still can't use the AMD adapter.  How do I fix this? Any help would be really appreciated

Welcome to HP Community

I have gone through your Post and would like to help

I suggest you download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...

HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook

  1. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.

Click Updates in the My notebook pane

  2. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.

Updates list in HP Support Center

  3. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.

  4. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.

  5. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Also ensure Windows is up to date.

Select the Start  button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update , and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available

Keep me posted how it goes

Thank you and have a wonderful day 😊

Krazy Toad, thank you for your reply.  I did as you suggested although your version of HP Support Assistant was different to the one which was installed on my computer (the latest on the support web page for my computer) and which I had previously run and which showed no updates.  I do not think your suggested version works with my computer (an AIO, not a notebook as your reply stated) as it could not download any updates at all. See screenshot below. I ran it twice with the same result. It seems HP long ago stopped supporting my computer (I had a very difficult time getting HP support to make the new firmware installer for Spectre etc some years ago but they eventually did thanks to the intervention of one member) so I think the solution has to come from an interested person, rather than corporate support. Nevertheless I thank you for your assistance and would appreciate any other assistance you can give. This display adapter seems to be an HP adaptation of an AMD adapter as the version number has never appeared on AMD's website (even immediately after I purchased the computer new from HP!!) and so no driver exists outside of HP and it appears that it requires some kind of specialised installation to work. Any other ideas?Annotation 2020-08-19 113431.png

Try running the AMD Auto Detect Tool and check if that helps

Thank you again Krazy Toad for your prompt reply. As an update to my previous post it now appears that the new HP Support tool I installed yesterday is in fact working but it found no useful new software.

To the present situation.  i went to the page you indicated but am very concerned with what I see.  First of all the page which allows manual selection of the graphics adapter does not show my model - the closest is AMD R7 M365. Second, the instructions for the tool say to only use it to update a driver if the model is found in the list (which it isn't) as, if it isn't, it means that it was adapted by HP whose drivers should only be used; and thirdly, the driver the tool wants to install is Adrenalin-2020-20.8.2-MinimalSetup-200817, which would not appear to be correct for my computer.

Can you confirm that if I install the recommended driver and it doesn't work, I will be able to uninstall it without damage to the computer which will continue to work, as it does now, on the Intel adapter?

Yes you can install the Radeon Software adrenaline

Once again, Crazy Toad, thank you, but still no luck.  I installed the adrenaline software which caused no problem, uninstalling the original software in the process, and the Device Manager now shows the adapter as an M370, instead of an A365 but I still cannot get the computer to connect to that adapter.  There is no setting in either Settings, Device Manager or the new Radeon software installed with the driver, to enable the computer to connect to that adapter. I even tried disabling the Intel adapter but, as before, it only switches to the basic Microsoft driver, not to the Radeon.

I have come to the reluctant conclusion that a later update to Windows 10 (I am running 1909) does not like the adapter and won't connect to it so this 'feature' of my computer is now defunct.  I would be happy to try any further suggestions you may have but don't hold out much hope. Thank you again for your assistance.

If the issue was caused by the latest update, let's try a System Restore to an earlier time before this issue started

Thanks Crazy Toad, but it wasn't the latest update - I am running 1909 and it was either 1809 or 1903 ( I can't remember which) which failed and I had to reinstall Windows - and anyway I'm sure I read somewhere that Restore points do not work after rebooting after a Feature update. It took a while before I realized I was running on the wrong display adapter. I am resigned to being content with what I've got - at least it works and works well - until Windows refuses to update because of old display software (eg I haven't been offered 2004 yet).

BTW, Can I safely install the new software for the Intel 530, should it become necessary? Intel's site warns that the present driver is 'customized' by HP and HP has not offered an updated driver for many years. I am happy to continue on the present drivers since I can't get the Radeon to be recognized but am concerned that I will soon have to abandon an otherwise good computer because HP thought it necessary to customize its drivers and then not update them.

Many thanks again for your attempts to help.  Any further ideas? If not I'll close this correspondence.

@bryash

I suggest you continue with the present drivers. For older models nowadays manufacturers are not creating new updated drivers. Microsoft updates will install all the latest drivers during Windows updates. I suggest you wait for the 2004 Update. These updates are rolled out in a sequential manner. So not all computers will get the update at the same time..
