HP Pavilion Desktop PC TP01-2000a (2Z6C9AV)

I have HP Pavilion Desktop PC TP01 2137 c It has only VGA and HDMI display ports. I have Dell monitor with VGA and DVI inputs VGA connection works. I Used DVI to HDMI adapter to connect HDMI port of the desktop. DVI option shows only DESKTOP screensaver and taskbar but cannot control. Nothing else works. What settings do need to do to get HDMI display working?

Hi @pppat, Welcome to HP Support Community. 👋

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP Pavilion Desktop TP01-2137 and Dell monitor are not fully communicating through the HDMI-to-DVI adapter. Since VGA works fine but the HDMI-to-DVI only displays a static desktop background and taskbar (without control), the issue is likely related to display settings or signal compatibility. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve this:

Check Display Settings in Windows

  1. Right-click on the desktop and select Display settings.
  2. Scroll down to the Multiple displays section.
  3. If your Dell monitor is listed, ensure it's set to Extend these displays (not "Show only on 1").
  4. If it’s set to "Extend," but the screen still does not respond, try changing it to Duplicate and then back to Extend.
  5. Click Apply and OK.

Detect the Display Manually

  1. In Display settings, scroll down and click Detect under the “Multiple displays” section.
  2. If the monitor does not appear, click Advanced display settings, select the monitor, and adjust the resolution to match your Dell monitor's native resolution.

Check HDMI-to-DVI Adapter Type

  • Active vs. Passive Adapter: Some HDMI-to-DVI adapters are passive and may not properly convert the signal. Try using an active HDMI-to-DVI adapter for better compatibility.
  • Check Adapter Compatibility: Ensure your adapter supports the correct signal conversion (HDMI output to DVI input).

Try a Different HDMI Port (If Available)

  • If your desktop has multiple HDMI ports (such as from a dedicated GPU and the motherboard), try connecting to a different HDMI port.

Update Graphics Drivers

  1. Open Device Manager (Win + X → Device Manager).
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Right-click on your GPU (Intel UHD/AMD/NVIDIA) and select Update driver.
  4. Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.

Check Monitor Input Source

  • Make sure the Dell monitor is set to the correct input:
    • Press the Menu button on the Dell monitor.
    • Go to Input Source and select DVI.

Test with a Different HDMI Cable or Adapter

  • If possible, try using a different HDMI-to-DVI adapter or HDMI cable.
  • If your Dell monitor has an HDMI port (some models do), try using a direct HDMI-to-HDMI connection instead.

Check Display Arrangement

  1. Go to Display settings.
  2. If you see two displays represented by numbered boxes (1 and 2), drag them around to match the physical positioning of your monitors.
  3. Click Apply.

I hope this helps. 🙂

Take care and have a good day. 😇
