Hi @Pkbte ,

Thank you for choosing HP Community,

When the HP Z840 workstation produces 8 beeps, it typically indicates a problem with the graphics card that prevents the display from functioning. Here are a few steps you can follow to troubleshoot and address this issue:

  1. Check the Graphics Card:
    • Ensure that the graphics card is properly seated in its PCIe slot. Sometimes reseating the card can solve the problem.
    • Inspect the graphics card for any visible damage or loose connections.
  2. Power Connections:
    • Verify that all power connectors are securely attached to the graphics card. Some cards require additional power connectors from the power supply.
  3. BIOS Settings:
    • Access the BIOS by pressing F10 during startup. Check if the graphics card is being recognized and if any settings related to onboard graphics (if available) are enabled.
  4. Swap Components:
    • If you have another compatible graphics card available, try swapping it to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem lies with the graphics card or another component.
  5. Update BIOS and Drivers:
    • Ensure that the workstation BIOS is updated to the latest version. You can find updates and instructions on the HP Support website.
    • Make sure all drivers, including chipset and graphics drivers, are current.
  6. Test with Minimum Configuration:
    • Disconnect any other peripherals or internal components that aren’t necessary for booting. Sometimes isolating components helps pinpoint the issue.

Resetting BIOS on HP Z840 Workstation

This process can often restore default BIOS settings even when the display is not functioning. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Power Down the System:
    • Ensure the workstation is completely powered off. Disconnect the power cord from the power outlet.
  2. Access the Motherboard:
    • Open the workstation chassis using the appropriate method to expose the motherboard.
  3. Locate the CMOS Jumper:
    • Find the "Clear CMOS" jumper on the motherboard. The location and label may vary, so it's helpful to refer to the specific service manual or motherboard diagram for the HP Z840.
  4. Clear the CMOS:
    • Usually, there is a jumper specifically designated for clearing the CMOS. Temporarily change the jumper setting to the 'clear' position for a few seconds, then return it to the default position. This step may require removing and replacing the jumper from one pin set to another. Ensure you handle the jumper with care to avoid static discharge.
  5. Remove and Reinsert the CMOS Battery:
    • As an alternative or additional step, remove the CMOS battery from its slot, wait for about a minute, and then reinsert it. This action can also help reset the BIOS.
  6. Reassemble and Power On:
    • After the CMOS has been cleared, reassemble the workstation by securing the chassis. Reconnect the power cord and other peripherals. Power on the workstation to see if the display issue is resolved.

By performing these steps, the BIOS should reset to its default settings, potentially resolving issues that arose from misconfigurations. If problems persist, further diagnosis or support from HP might be needed.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
