HP Z24n G2 24-inch Display

Hello. I'm using the Z24n G2 with 2 machines, one connected over HDMI (macbookpro11.1) and the other over DisplayPort (macmini6.2). The USB-C upstream is connected to the macbook's normal (type A) port. The monitor's downstream ports are used for things like keyboard, network adapter (bottom type A ports), and desk lamp (type A) and mobile device charging (type C) (side ports).

I have 2 problems here:

  • Whenever switching to HDMI, the HDMI link is (probably) momentarily disconnected from the computer, prompting desktop rearrangement (the machine has a 2nd monitor connected). This may actually repeat several times before settling down. Is there a way to keep the HDMI link up at all times?
  • After long periods of the monitor being on or sleeping (not turned off with the front power button), switching between inputs and/or input coming on/off causes USB power to cut out momentarily, or permanently, on the side ports (I can't vouch for the bottom ports but with side ports the cut-out is very apparent due to the desk lamp powering up). This is highly annoying, as it can happen in the middle of the night thanks to Apple's PowerNap, resulting in mobile devices not charging. This can usually be fixed by power-off (front button), or when that fails, power-cycle (switch at the AC input). Is there some know cause and/or workaround for these power cutouts?

I have disabled energy saver to make the USB hub work. I have tried both options for the dynamic USB power (Auto on & off), but the problem persists

There are two possible solutions to the first problems that I can think of.

One of my windows systems is connected to a large screen TV through an HDMI switch.  I used a dummy DisplayPort load on one of the extra ports of the GTX-1070 and configured windows to mirror the two "displays".  Dummy loads can be 2k or 4k and HDMI or DP.  I do not know the particulars of your configuration and what ports the Macs have so this may not be a solution.   On systems where I have to extend the displays one must use an app such as "Icon Shephard".  It can remember icons positions and can restore to a "remembered" screen configuration.  I have not actually used that app and it only runs on Windows.  I have switched to windows 11 recently and the problem is not bad enough to justify  getting that app plus it advertisements if used free.

The problem with the USB ports may be due to the monitor not waking up its downstream USB ports.  You may have to not enable sleep or standby and have the Mac use a blank screen saver.   Monitors wakeup from standby or sleep when receiving a TMDS signal.  Pushing a button on the monitor to switch back to active should wakeup the USB ports.

Hope this helps.
