my monitor is an older model. I just got my hard drive fixed and reconnected it and my monitor upon hooking it up displays an error message that says “initial signal at a range, change settings to 14 40 by 900-600 HZ“. No matter what button I push I can’t fix this. Shutting the monitor on or off doesn’t help. Can anyone assist?

@Bea369, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're seeing an error on your older HP monitor that says:

"Input signal out of range. Change settings to 1440 x 900 - 60Hz"

This message typically appears when the display settings on your computer are set to a resolution or refresh rate that your monitor cannot support. Here's how to fix it:

Step-by-Step Solution

Option 1: Boot into Safe Mode (Windows)

  1. Turn off your PC completely.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately press the F8 key repeatedly (before the Windows logo appears).
  3. From the Advanced Boot Options, select Safe Mode and press Enter.
  4. Once in Safe Mode:
    • Right-click on the desktop and select Display settings.
    • Scroll to Display resolution and set it to 1440 x 900.
    • Click Advanced display settings > Display adapter properties > Monitor tab.
    • Set the refresh rate to 60Hz.
  5. Restart your PC normally.

Option 2: Use a Different Monitor Temporarily

If Safe Mode doesn’t work or is inaccessible:

  1. Connect a different monitor that supports the current resolution.
  2. Boot into Windows and change the resolution to 1440 x 900 @ 60Hz.
  3. Shut down the PC and reconnect your original HP monitor.

Option 3: Use Low-Resolution Mode

  1. Restart your PC and press F8 repeatedly.
  2. Select Enable low-resolution video (640x480).
  3. Once logged in, change the resolution to 1440 x 900 @ 60Hz as described above.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
