I got an HP laptop from my Grand PA who has no idea on how to operate it, and after receiving the gift I found out that the laptop has half of it's screen black and also locked, so please if there's any way to make the screen whole again without opening it then that would be great or vise versa

Hi @Michael-1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP laptop has a screen issue and is locked with a password or other security measure. Here are some steps you can take to address both problems.

For the Screen Issue:

Check the Connection:

  • Sometimes, a loose connection can cause display issues. If you can, gently adjust the screen's position to see if the black part changes. If it's an external monitor, check the cable connections.

Try an External Monitor:

  • Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV. If the external display works fine, the issue may be with the laptop’s screen rather than the internal components.

Update or Reinstall Graphics Drivers:

  • If you can access the laptop through an external monitor or by booting into Safe Mode, try updating or reinstalling the graphics drivers.

Check for Physical Damage:

  • Inspect the screen for any visible damage.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off the laptop, unplug it, and remove the battery (if possible). Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds. Then reconnect the battery and power it on.

For the Locked Laptop:

Password Recovery:

  • If it's a Windows laptop, use the built-in password recovery options. On the login screen, select "I forgot my password" and follow the prompts.

Use a Password Reset Disk:

  • If you created a password reset disk, you can use it to reset your password.

Safe Mode:

  • Boot into Safe Mode by pressing F8 (or Shift + F8) during startup. This might allow you to access the laptop and make necessary changes.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
