Hi @RW8-8

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I’m really sorry you’re dealing with a screen behaving like that. When the display suddenly turns white with lines, it usually means the system is struggling to maintain a stable video signal.

Let’s walk through a few steady, clear steps to narrow it down. I’ll keep everything Windows‑focused and professional.

Here’s what I’d like you to try:

1. Give the display a fresh start
Let the system power down completely. Wait until the fans stop and the screen goes fully dark. Then turn it back on and watch whether the white screen appears immediately or only after Windows loads.

2. Check the display cable connection (for desktops or external monitors)
A loose or partially seated cable can cause flickering, white screens, or lines.
• Gently unplug and firmly reconnect the cable at both ends.
• If you have another cable, try swapping it to see if the picture stabilizes.
• If you’re using HDMI/DisplayPort, make sure the connector feels snug.

3. Try an external monitor (for laptops)
If you have access to any external display, connect it and see whether the external screen shows a clean picture.
• If the external display looks normal, the issue is likely with the laptop’s built‑in panel or cable.
• If the external display also shows white or lines, the issue is likely with the graphics path.

4. Boot into Windows Safe Mode
This helps us see whether the issue is caused by drivers or software.
• Hold Shift and restart the PC.
• Choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart.
• Select Safe Mode.
If the screen stays stable in Safe Mode, it points toward a driver or software conflict.

5. Update the graphics driver
Once you’re back in normal Windows, open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
• Right‑click your graphics device and choose Update driver.
• Restart the system afterward.

6. Run a system display test
Windows has built‑in diagnostics that can help isolate display behavior.
• Press Windows + R
• Type: mdsched.exe
• Restart and let the test run.
This checks memory stability, which can sometimes affect display output.

7. Observe when the issue appears
Does the white screen appear:
• Only when moving the lid (for laptops)
• Randomly during use
• Immediately at startup
• Only under load (gaming, video, etc.)

This helps pinpoint whether it’s a physical connection, panel behavior, or graphics processing.

You’re doing the right thing by reaching out early. Let me know what you notice after trying these steps, and we’ll keep moving forward together.
