Thanks, I did look at the manual and it appears to be for disassembling the entire monitor. 

 

They instruct to remove the four back screws, and then the photo implies a smooth motion to remove the stand.

 

However, I am not trying to disassemble the whole thing but only remove the stand for packing purposes.  I will try it as a last resort, but does anyone else have any feedback?

 

It looks like there is a lever in the slot that might release something, but I am afraid to try it without someone more knowledgeable to recommend it first.
