HP ENVY Curved 34-a090na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

Really hope someone smarter than me on this subject can give me some suggestions

I have an all-in-one PC (HP Envy 34 curved) which has been great but I’ve reached the end of upgrade potential in terms of graphics card and needed a proper gaming card. I purchased a higher end gaming machine with a GEForce GTX 1080TI card and was intending to use the HP AIO in monitor mode, so I could use the lovely 34 inch curved screen with the new gaming machine. Idea was to use both machines through the same display. The HP AIO for everyday usage and the gaming machine for gaming only, by using “monitor mode” output on the HP Envy, so it was a fast and seamless switch

However, no matter what I try, I cannot get them to talk to each other and the HP screen ends up in sleep mode, as if there is no signal. Here is what I know and what I’ve tried:

-Gaming PC isn’t faulty. I have verified by plugging it into an HDTV and it loads windows on there

- Monitor (HP Envy AIO) isn’t faulty. I can plug a laptop in using the same HDMI cable and it successfully and without effort, displays my laptop on the AIO screen

-HDMI cable isn’t faulty (because of point above) and I’ve tried 2 others, for good measure

-If I boot the gaming machine when attached to the AIO monitor and it’s “listening” in “monitor mode”, I see the splash screen of the BIOS loading on the HP envy screen. Then as soon as it would load windows, the screen blanks and I get monitor mode going to sleep

-curiously, if I plug the gaming machine into another output, such as an HDTV and then shut down and come back to the HP Envy AIO, it does load windows but not at the correct resolution! If I go into my display settings, I cannot increase resolution and even more strange is that it still believes it’s the HDTV attached and not the AIO (almost like it was tricked into loading because it thought it was the HDTV). If I pull the HDMI out and reseat it or even restart, then it goes back to monitor in sleep mode again. Basically I get a one time load (at a totally awful resolution) every time I come back to the AIO monitor after the HDTV

-have checked that the GPU is correctly seated on motherboard of the gaming PC

- I am plugging the HDMI into the GPU port and not the one on the motherboard

- I am using the HDMI in port on the HP Envy (on the back) and this is one of the units that supports HDMI in

-graphics driver is most up to date

-tried a windows reset (even if it was a new gaming machine)

It is just an issue with this HP monitor but I know this monitor can be used in monitor mode only via the HDMI “in” port on the back and as I said, it works just fine with my laptop, using the same hdmi cable

I am pulling my hair out because my gaming PC is effectively useless but it’s technically not faulty and would really appreciate any suggestions that I haven’t already tried
