HP 505 desktop
Linux

Apparently the integrated display adapter (GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 aka: "Nvidia C61") does not fully support Linux Mint or Ubuntu. Many display screens appear normal but when they don't the system "locks" and the display is grossly distorted. So:

(1) can the driver be successfully updated ??  I tried several times without success.

(2) if not, is there a cost-effective VGA card that works in the HP 505 with Linux or Ubuntu installed ?

Thanx.

When it put the model number indicated "HP 505" this is what I got

https://support.hp.com/us-en/deviceSearch?q=HP%20505%20desktop&origin=pdp

So in order to give you an answer, I need the rest of the model number.  As indicated there are many in the HP 505 line.  The GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 integrated graphics was quite common on older motherboards, so there should be a workaround on the Linux sites.  Otherwise a very easy graphics card can then be chosen after the model is posted.

Hello: the desktop with an integrated display adapter is:

HP 505B Microtower PC running Linux Mint 20.

Apparently HP does not have a suitable driver. Nvidia may have one but the skill level required to download & install is far beyond my "newbie" level.  Any solutions will be greatly appreciated since Linux appears to be a great alternative to Windows.  Thanx.

I did some checking on the problem with  GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 integrated graphics and Linux distros.  It seems the newer versions, in your case Mint 20 does not have a decent driver anymore.  I found the graphics card most likely to work is the NVIDIA Quadro FX 3450.  It was used in business PC's and should be OK for the Linux but I did not find or search too hard to see.  they are available on EBay for cheap.  Give it a try to tell.

HP does not usually provide drivers for non-Windows OS unless it came with a Linux as an option at the time of purchase.

I see that it had an option of Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11, but no drivers listed.
