I have a family tree program that is only 13 GB but it sometimes doesn't want to load or when it does load becomes unresponsive after a little while and I have to use Task Manager to shut it down. Why is this?

Hi @JohnR65
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out—and I’m really sorry to hear your family tree program is giving you a headache.
That kind of freeze-up can be super frustrating, especially when you're just trying to explore your roots.
Let’s get you back on track with some HP-recommended steps to help stabilize the program on your OMEN by HP 25L Gaming Desktop PC GT15-2000i:
🛠️ HP-Recommended Troubleshooting Steps
Update Graphics Drivers
- Visit the HP Software & Driver Downloads page and install the latest graphics drivers specific to your model.
- Outdated or mismatched drivers can cause programs to hang or crash.
Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics
- Use the built-in HP diagnostics tool to check for hardware issues.
- Press Ctrl + Alt + S to get your product info, then head to the HP Diagnostics page to run tests.
Check for Windows Updates
- Go to Settings > Windows Update and install any pending updates.
- Compatibility issues with older Windows builds can affect app performance.
Disable Background Apps
- Open Task Manager > Startup tab and disable unnecessary apps that launch with Windows.
- This frees up memory and CPU resources for your family tree program.
Run the Program in Compatibility Mode
- Right-click the program’s shortcut > Properties > Compatibility tab.
- Try running it in compatibility mode for an earlier version of Windows if it’s an older app.
Check Storage Health
- If your SSD or HDD is nearing capacity or has bad sectors, it could slow things down.
- Use HP’s Storage Diagnostic Tool or Windows’ built-in chkdsk command to scan for issues.
Reinstall the Program
- If all else fails, uninstall and reinstall the program to ensure clean configuration files.
I know it’s a lot to juggle, but you’re doing great by taking the initiative. If you’d like, I can walk you through any of these steps one by one. Let’s get that family tree blooming again 🌳!

Thanks for flagging that—when HP’s Software & Driver Downloads page doesn’t work, it can feel like hitting a wall just when you need a fix.
Here’s what you can try to get around it:
🛠️ Quick Fixes for HP Download Issues
Use HP Support Assistant Instead
- If the website isn’t cooperating, open the HP Support Assistant app (preinstalled on most HP devices).
- It can automatically detect your model and install drivers without needing the browser.
Try a Different Browser or Clear Cache
- Some users found success switching from Chrome to Edge or Firefox.
- Clear your browser cache and cookies, then reload the page.
Directly Search for Your Product
- Go to HP’s driver page and manually enter your product name or number.
- This bypasses broken links from other pages.
Check for OS Compatibility
- If your operating system isn’t listed, HP may not offer drivers for it.
- You can try using Windows Update or generic drivers from the hardware manufacturer.
