New system bought in Jan this year. Screen has always flickered occasionally (every couple of minutes). Also, every time I go to Device Manager, it keeps refreshing about every 2 seconds. Can't even read it let alone click on anything. I see this problem all over the internet but seeing any solutions. Don't know if this is a system problem or a Windows problem. I have had many computers over the years and never had seen this problem. I have no USB devices installed at this time. All updates have been done (Windows and HP). Full virus scan shows no problems.

Any help?

Welcome to HP Forums. This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.

I understand that the screen flickers alot and when you go to Device Manager is keeps refreshing

I see that you have already performed all the Windows and HP update

I appreciate your efforts and expertise in troubleshooting this issue

Please check in the BIOS and let me know if the screen flickers

Shut down the Computer and upon restarting keep tapping on F10 till you see the System Configuration ( BIOS ) Screen

Keep it under observation and let me know if it flickers

If the screen flickers in BIOS, please contact our Phone Support for Service Options

1) Click on this link - www.hp.com/contacthp/

2) Click on "Continue as guest".

3) Enter the serial of your device. You can refer to this Link: hp.care/2bygf7l for help in locating your Serial Number.

4) Select the country from the drop-down.

5) Click on "Show Options".

If the Screen Does Not flicker in BIOS, Please backup your data and perform a System Recovery

- Turn off the computer.Disconnect all connected devices and cables such as Personal Media Drives, USB drives, printers, and faxes.
- Turn on the computer and repeatedly press the F11 key about once every second until the Choose an option screen is displayed, and then continue.
- On the Choose an Option screen, click Troubleshoot.
- On the Troubleshoot screen, click Recovery Manager.
- Under Help, click System Recovery.
- When Recovery Manager prompts you to back up your files, select a backup option:
- The Welcome to HP Recovery Manager screen is displayed. Read the on-screen information, and then disconnect any connected devices and cables, such as Personal Media Drives, USB drives, printers, and faxes.
- Remove media from internal drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware.
- Click Next to continue.
- When recovery preparation is complete, click Continue to proceed to the installation phase of the recovery process. The computer restarts several times during the recovery. This is normal. Do not close, shut down, or disconnect the computer while HP Recovery runs.
- Recovery Manager reformats the Windows partition and reinstalls the original software.
- After the system recovery is complete, click Finish to restart the computer. Complete the setup screens and wait until the computer finishes the setup.
- Once the setup is complete, turn off the computer, reconnect all devices and cables, and then turn on the computer.
- Before using the computer, update and protect your computer by reinstalling any virus and security software that was installed before the system recovery.
- Reinstall any software programs that were added after purchasing the computer, as well as any files that were backed up.

Keep me posted if you need further assistance

I have reset my computer to original state and have not noticed the screen flicker (YET), so I hope that might have cleared up. However, you did not address my 2nd problem with the Device Manager.

As an additional note, I went to safe mode and the DM did not do the refresh every 2 seconds. It did show several items with the exclamation mark. Don't if this was because I was in safe mode or whether they are true problem devices.

Generic PNP Moniter (probably normal for safe mode?)

Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth

Intel Display Audio

Nvidia Virtual Audio Device

Realtek HD Audio

Any way to figure this out?

Thanks for keeping me posted

In Safe Mode only the basic drivers are used by the computer and that is why several drivers like Audio or Graphics card wont work.

Does the Device Manager list keep refreshing after the System Recovery?

Meantime please complete all the Windows updates

  • To check for updates now, select the Start  button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update, and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available.

Keep me posted

Thank you

I used to build my own systems and have been around since DOS. Yes, my system has all the W10 and HP updates. I have not installed any of my programs yet and have nothing plugged into any of the ports. I have done a full scan of system. Device manager keeps flashing and yes, the screen flicker is back also.
