Hi @HueyP,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding PC shutting down randomly!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Try these troubleshooting steps:
1. Check Display Cable & Power Supply
- Ensure the power cable is securely connected.
- If using an external monitor, check the HDMI/VGA cable.
- Plug the PC directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip.
2. Update Graphics Drivers
- Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display Adapters.
- Right-click your graphics card (Intel UHD/AMD/NVIDIA) and select Update driver → Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart your PC after the update.
3. Adjust Power Settings
- Press Windows + R, type powercfg.cpl, and press Enter.
- Select High Performance or Balanced (not Power Saver).
- Click Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings.
- Expand PCI Express > Link State Power Management and set it to Off.
4. Check Windows Updates & HP Support Assistant
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and install pending updates.
- Open HP Support Assistant and check for firmware or BIOS updates.
5. Scan for Malware
- Run Windows Defender or Malwarebytes to check for any malware that could be affecting system stability.

6. Check Event Viewer for Errors
- Press Windows + X → Select Event Viewer.
- Go to Windows Logs > System and look for any critical errors around the time the black screen issue occurred.
- Let me know if you find error codes!
7. Perform a Clean Boot
- Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter.
- Under the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services.
- Click Disable All, then Apply and restart the PC.
- If the issue stops, a background app is causing it—reenable apps one by one to find the culprit.
8. Reset or Reinstall Graphics Driver
- Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B (this restarts the display driver).
- If the problem persists:
- Open Device Manager → Display Adapters.
- Right-click the driver → Uninstall device (check "Delete driver software").
- Restart your PC; Windows will reinstall the driver.
9. Check for Overheating
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Go to Performance and check CPU and GPU temperatures.
- If temperatures exceed 80°C, clean the vents and use a cooling pad.
10. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics
- Turn off the PC.
- Turn it back on and immediately press F2 to open HP Hardware Diagnostics.
- Run System Tests to check for hardware issues.
If the problem persists, let me know what steps you've tried and any error messages you found! 😊
I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?"—your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster! 👍✨
