HP EliteBook 840 G6 Notebook PC
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi HP Members,

I own an HP ELITEBOOK 840 G6, OS WIN 11 PRO (VER 24H2). Nowadays im not able to connect my second monitor display (HP W2072a) and second monitor is showing ''MONITOR GOING TO SLEEP'', I think 2nd monitor is detecting but not showing. I did checked the display cable (mine is VGA TO HDMI which was working perfectly before, i did changed the monitor too, i did driver updates, all possible troubleshooting) but still same issue. My other colleague also is having same issue with his HP Probook laptop win 11 pro.

Note that one troubleshoot I did yesterday was with 1 HP laptop running OS WIN 10 PRO and with the same monitor and its working perfectly.

Can someone please assist me to fix this issue or if this issue is with win 11 pro only?

Thanks & regards,

SM

Hello SanMoh,
Good day. Thank you for reaching out to the Hp community. I would be delighted to assist you. Superb description and terrific troubleshooting. Kudos to you for that.

This “monitor going to sleep” issue with VGA-to-HDMI adapters has become common since Windows 11 23H2/24H2, especially on HP laptops.

1. Update your graphics drivers (Intel + optional NVIDIA if hybrid)

  • Visit Intel Driver & Support Assistant → install the latest Intel Graphics Driver.

  • If your system also has NVIDIA GPU (some EliteBooks do), install the latest NVIDIA Game Ready driver.

  • Reboot → then try connecting the monitor again

2. Change adapter type (preferred permanent fix)

If you’re using a VGA → HDMI converter:

  • It’s an active adapter, and newer drivers handle these differently.

  • Replace it with a DisplayPort → HDMI or USB-C → HDMI adapter instead (most modern HP laptops support these).

  • You’ll instantly regain stable dual-display output.

3. Roll back to an earlier Intel Graphics Driver

If this issue started recently (after Windows Update), try:

  1. Press Win + X → Device Manager → Display adapters

  2. Right-click Intel Graphics → Properties → Driver tab → Roll Back Driver

  3. Restart and check again.

4. Force display detection manually

  1. Right-click desktop → Display settings → Multiple displays → Detect

  2. Click Advanced display settings → Display adapter properties → Monitor tab

  3. Ensure refresh rate matches (60 Hz for HP W2072a).

  4. Press Win + P → choose Extend or Second screen only.

5. BIOS and chipset updates

HP periodically updates system firmware for display compatibility.

  • Run HP Support Assistant → Updates → Check for updates

  • Install BIOS, chipset, and graphics-related updates.

Keep me posted if that helps.
