HP All-in-One Desktop PC 24-cr0000i (70P31AV)

I am trying to use my HP AIO as a monitor for my Macbook Pro. I plugged in an HDMI cable into my Mac and then into my HP but nothing happened. I also tried hitting Windows + P to change the display and that didn't work either.

How do I make this work?

How do I determine if the HDMI slot is just and HDMI-OUT and NOT and HDMI-IN?

It only says "HDMI" on the back of the computer.

Hi @alcoh71,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're trying to use your HP All-In-One (AIO) Desktop PC 24 as an external monitor for your MacBook Pro via HDMI, but it's not working as expected. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue.

  • Check HDMI Input/Output: The first thing you need to determine is whether the HDMI port on your HP AIO is an input or output port. If it's an input port, you can use the AIO as a monitor for your MacBook Pro. If it's an output port, you won't be able to use the AIO as a monitor. Usually, HDMI ports on computers are output ports, but some AIO PCs come with HDMI input ports as well.
  • Consult the Manual: If you're unsure about the HDMI port on your HP AIO, refer to the user manual or specifications online. It should specify whether the HDMI port is an input or output.
  • Inspect the Port: If you can't find the information in the manual, inspect the HDMI port physically. Sometimes, there might be small icons or labels next to the port indicating whether it's an input or output.
  • Try Different Input: If you've confirmed that the HDMI port on your HP AIO is an input, make sure you're using the correct HDMI input port. Some AIO PCs have multiple HDMI ports, and only one might be designated for input.
  • Check MacBook Settings: Ensure that your MacBook Pro is outputting the display signal correctly. Go to System Preferences > Displays and make sure the external display is detected.
  • Check Cable and Connections: Verify that the HDMI cable is properly connected to both your MacBook Pro and the HP AIO. Try using a different HDMI cable to rule out any issues with the cable itself.
  • Restart Devices: Sometimes, simply restarting both your MacBook Pro and HP AIO can resolve connection issues.
  • Update Drivers/Firmware: Check for any available updates for your HP AIO's drivers or firmware that might improve compatibility with external devices.

If after following these steps you still can't get it to work, it's possible that your HP AIO doesn't support HDMI input, in which case you won't be able to use it as a monitor for your MacBook Pro. If that's the case, you might need to consider alternative options such as using a dedicated external monitor.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for this detailed response. The manual does NOT say if the HDMI connector is input or output and the manual doesn't say either. I'm guessing it is only output but would be helpful to have a real answer.

I tried your other steps like seeing if my Mac recognizes the HP display and it doesn't appear to show it.

I'm guessing I can't use the PC as a monitor for the Mac but would be helpful to really know from manual.
