HP ENVY 24 23.8-inch Display W5A11AA#ABA
macOS 10.14 Mojave

I hooked my laptop up to my monitor today via USB-C and it is no longer providing power to my MacBook and it isn't receiving a display signal either. I've done a bit of troubleshooting on the ports on the MacBook as well as the cable and have determined that the issue is with the USB-C port on the monitor. Are their any solutions I can try at home before taking it to BestBuy for repair? I am able to use a USB-C to HDMI adapter on my MacBook and run the display that way, but I don't get power back to the MacBook. I am trying to minimize cables so the single USB-C is the reason I bought this.

The easiest thing that comes to mind is that the Power Mode may have gotten changed.

I don't have that exact monitor but I would assume it has the same feature as mine.

Using the on screen menus of the monitor find Power Mode.  Verify that it did not some how get switched to Power Saver.  If it did, switch it back to Performance.  Power Saver will disable all the USB ports on the display.

I unplugged everything from the monitor and plugged it back in and it didn't work. I was frustrated after that so I unplugged it all and let it sit. I reconnected everything after 30 min to test your fix and it worked again before I even checked. So thanks for the post, it got me to reconnect it and it worked!

I am able to use the monitor as display but it does not charge fast enough. normal usage drains my battery despite the charging symbol visible on macbook pro.

I do not see the "Power Mode". Here are the menu items I see:

Main menu

-----

Brightness

Contrast

Color control

Input control (selecting source)

Image control

Power control (auto sleep mode, power-on recall, sleep timer, power led - nothing related to power mode)

Menu control

Management (factory reset, DDC/CI support)
