Victus by HP 15L Gaming Desktop PC TG02-0000i RCTO Base Model

I recently got a Victus by HP 15L Gaming Desktop PC.

First issue : computer won't recognize monitor when using HDMI cord

For my previous computer (also an HP), I used a ViewSonic VA2855Smh monitor. When I went to change this monitor over to the new Victus, the ports at the top left corner of the back panel of the computer were covered, and did not function. Through customer support chat, I was able to find out that - lol wut?? - that these ports are disabled, so that you cannot actually use them, and that the monitor needs to be connected via the HDMI ports further down the case (auxillary ports? sorry, can't find paperwork to know what these are technically called).

Anyway, this HDMI port WILL NOT RECOGNIZE *any* monitors connected to the computer with an HDMI cord (HDMI both ends). It did not recognize the ViewSonic VA2855Smh and it did not recognize a much more recent model - brand new Samsung monitor CF391.

This is not a "maybe your HDMI cord is faulty", because I have tried 3 different HDMI cords. What DOES work is to have a VGA cord and attach that to an HDMI adapter - then the computer has NO problem recognizing (discovering/using) that a monitor is attached to it.

I logged into HP chat and spent an hour with a tech who basically re-ran all the driver installations (which I'd already tried), and the Victus will still not recognize an HDMI-to-HDMI connection, ONLY the adapted VGA-HDMI connection. Their only further suggestion is to reset the computer to "fresh from factory" state (already tried that, it didn't work).

Any other suggestions to get the computer to recognize an HDMI to HDMI connection? I feel like I'm not getting the full resolution capability out of this computer because I can't use the HDMI cord. (Also, the brand new Samsung monitor is much higher resolution capability than my old one, and graphics actually look worse on that monitor with the VGA/HDMI adapted connection than my old monitor.)

Second issue, but related : I have a USB data transfer cord that I wanted to use so I could simply transfer files from my old comptuer to my new (instead of the double labor of transferring to backup drive, then transferring to new computer). USB ports work fine for recognizing things are attached to the computer (external drives, etc) but does not recognize there is another computer when I attach them via USB cord. Would I have to set them up as a network instead? (was trying to avoid going through that hassle.)

Thank you for any advice.
