I have a hp laptop. The screen started flashing red green white blue black while I was using it. I haven't done any upgrades software or hardware.

I have tried fn+s+v didn't work

I have tried f8 and f12 key methods still didn't work.

Hi @Chard254,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like your HP laptop is experiencing display issues, which could be related to hardware or software. Here are several steps you can try to resolve the flashing screen issue.

Restart the Laptop in Safe Mode

  • Sometimes, a software issue or a driver conflict can cause these display problems. Booting into Safe Mode may help narrow down the cause.
    • Steps:
      1. Turn off your laptop.
      2. Turn it back on and immediately start pressing the F8 key (or Shift + F8 on some models) until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears.
      3. Select Safe Mode and press Enter.
    • If the screen behaves normally in Safe Mode, it may be a software or driver issue.

Update or Reinstall the Graphics Driver

  • If the issue is caused by corrupted or outdated graphics drivers, updating or reinstalling them could fix the problem.
    • Steps:
      1. Right-click on Start and select Device Manager.
      2. Expand the Display adapters section.
      3. Right-click on your graphics driver and choose Update driver or Uninstall device (if you uninstall, reboot, and Windows will reinstall the driver).
      4. If you're unable to update or uninstall, go to HP’s official support website to download and install the latest driver.

Check for External Display or Cable Issues

  • If you are using an external monitor, the flashing could be caused by a faulty connection or cable.
    • Try connecting your laptop to another external monitor to see if the issue persists.
    • If you are not using an external display, connect your laptop to one to check if the issue is with your internal screen.

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Sometimes, a power cycle (hard reset) can help clear up display issues caused by temporary hardware or software glitches.
    • Steps:
      1. Power off your laptop.
      2. Unplug it from the power source.
      3. Remove the battery (if removable).
      4. Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds to drain residual power.
      5. Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then turn it back on.

Check for Hardware Issues

  • If the issue persists, there could be a hardware problem with your laptop’s display or graphics card. In this case, you might need professional repair. Issues like a loose display cable, malfunctioning GPU, or damaged screen could cause these symptoms.

Perform a System Restore

  • If the issue started recently and you suspect it’s software-related (even if no recent updates or changes were made), you can try a System Restore to revert the system back to a working state.
    • Steps:
      1. Go to Control Panel > System and Security > System.
      2. Click System Protection on the left.
      3. Click System Restore and follow the prompts to restore your system to a previous point before the issue began.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
