HP Spectre x360 - 13-ae012dx

A circle began to manifest at the middle right edge of the screen, containing a cursor within it. Upon its appearance, the mouse cursor commenced flashing, rendering me unable to perform any actions for a brief period. When I attempt to reactivate it after a short duration, the issue reoccurs, complicating my ability to work effectively. Seems to be a known issue with the touch screen laptops. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

@dsouzar4Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the dot on the screen!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Could you check on the following:

1. How often does this issue occur? Does it happen randomly or after performing specific actions?
2. Have you noticed this behaviour after installing any new apps or updates?
3. Have you tried to connect an external monitor and see if the issue persists?

If the unit is completely blank/unresponsive please try the following Troubleshoots steps.

Step 1

1.    Turn off the Unit.

2.    Disconnect the AC adapter.

3.    Remove any discs from the disc drive.

4.    Remove memory cards from the card reader slot.

5.    Disconnect all nonessential peripheral devices, such as printers, scanners, external hard drives, and USB flash drives.

6.    Disconnect the AC adapter press and hold the power button for approximately 15 seconds.

7.    Reconnect the AC adapter and then turn on the computer.

Step 2

Turn off the unit and please press and hold the Windows key + letter B key and the power button together for 30 seconds after 30 seconds, 1st release the power button but keep holding the Windows key and B key for ten more seconds and then release these two keys If done correctly, you will see the display flashing once. Please attempt it thrice as this step and restart the unit.

Step 3

The unit has to be turned off, Press Win+ V while holding these two keys then Press the Power button, continue to hold all three keys for 30 seconds and then release the Power button first and then release these two keys Please attempt it thrice and then you may get a Pop-Up CMOS Check, and it will restart the unit

Even if you don't get a Pop-up restart the unit manually after 3 attempts.

After the above troubleshooting steps if the unit turns on/is responsive:

Disable Touchscreen Temporarily

To determine if the issue is related to the touchscreen, disable it temporarily:
• Open Device Manager (Press Windows + X and select Device Manager).
• Locate Human Interface Devices and expand the section.
• Right-click on HID-compliant touch screen and select Disable.
• Check if the issue persists. If disabling the touchscreen resolves the issue, you may need to update or reinstall the touchscreen driver.
Update Graphics and Touchscreen Drivers
• Go to Device Manager and update the display driver under Display Adapters and the touchscreen driver under Human Interface Devices.
• You can also go to the HP website to download the latest drivers for your specific model.
Check for Windows Updates
• Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for any pending updates. Sometimes, issues like this are fixed in cumulative updates.
Check for Interfering Software
• Some third-party software or utilities (like screen recording tools or touch-related apps) might interfere with the cursor behavior. Check your installed apps and consider disabling or uninstalling any non-essential ones.
Perform a System Scan
• Run sfc /scannow in the Command Prompt (Admin) to check for system file corruption that may be causing the issue.
Adjust Mouse Settings
• Go to Settings > Devices > Mouse and check the settings there. Ensure that nothing is configured in a way that could conflict with your touchpad or external mouse.
System Restore
• If the issue started after a recent change (e.g., update or new software installation), you can use System Restore to revert your system back to a point where everything worked fine.

NOTE
: Before proceeding with a System Restore, it’s crucial to back up your files to avoid potential data loss. System Restore reverts your computer to a previous state, which means any files, applications, or settings changes made after the restore point will be lost.

Take care and have an amazing day!
