So my computer tried to update a while ago and had issues, saying there was a problem, so it restarted, and then whenever it closes, it acts like it turned completely off, and I have to hit the power button. I can no longer change the brightness. I don't really care about the power and brightness thing anymore, but my computer won't update, neither will the drivers, and when I plug an HDMI into it, nothing shows up on the TV or monitor, so I'm trying to free space, and it's not working. it says installed apps take up about 19-20 GB, but when I click on the button to see installed apps, it only shows 9 apps that don't add up to even 1 GB. I don't want to factory reset; I just want to update my stupid computer and see if that fixes the whole not showing up on screens when HDMI is plugged in.

Hi @Kat-erine,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • The exact model of your HP computer.
  • Which version of Windows you’re currently running (Windows 10 or Windows 11).
  • Do you recall if the failed update was a Windows update or a driver update?
  • Have you recently freed up disk space or installed/uninstalled any large programs?

Suggested Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter
    • Go to Settings → Update & Security → Troubleshoot → Additional troubleshooters.
    • Select Windows Update and run the troubleshooter to fix stuck updates.
  2. Check Disk Space & Storage Settings
    • Go to Settings → System → Storage.
    • Run Storage Sense to clear temporary files.
    • Sometimes Windows shows incorrect app sizes; clearing cache can fix this.
  3. Update Drivers via HP Support Assistant
    • Open HP Support Assistant (preinstalled on most HP devices).
    • Run a full check for driver updates, especially graphics and chipset drivers.
  4. Fix HDMI Output
    • Right-click on the desktop → Display settings.
    • Scroll down to Multiple displays → click Detect.
    • If still not working, update your graphics driver in Device Manager → Display adapters.
  5. System File Check
    • Open Command Prompt as administrator.
    • Type: sfc /scannow → press Enter.
    • This will repair corrupted system files that may be blocking updates and drivers.
  6. Check Power Settings
  • Go to Settings → System → Power & sleep.
  • Ensure Choose what closing the lid does is set correctly (so it doesn’t fully power off).

If these steps don’t resolve the issue, we may need to repair Windows using recovery media, but we’ll try to avoid a full factory reset unless absolutely necessary.

I hope this helps.
