I used my laptop and a extended screen function. However this morning it has just stopped working in the middle of me using it, the screen just started pixelating and then went black.

I have tried a different laptop so i know the screen and HDMI are not the issue . I also tried the laptop at another station and its doesnt recognise that the laptop is connected . However when i connect with USB type C , the laptop makes a sound to indicated something has just been connected but nothing projects on to monitor.

From your description it appears the HDMI electronics in the laptop failed.

There is a small chance it overheated and if turned off for an hour or so it might work when turned back on.

If that is the case then blow out any dust and use a laptop cooler.

You can also project or cast to your external monitor but you will need to add a Wi-Fi adapter to the HDMI input of the monitor.  Roku or Microsoft or any cheap Wi-Fi to HDMI network adapter.
