Hi @linken1322

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

That’s definitely not the experience you should be having with a brand-new HP desktop. If it consistently freezes during shutdown and forces a manual power-off, it’s likely a system-level issue—either with drivers, BIOS, or Windows power management.

Let’s walk through a structured fix:

Step-by-Step Fix for Shutdown Freezing

1. Disable Fast Startup

Fast Startup can cause shutdown hangs on some systems.

  • Go to Control PanelPower OptionsChoose what the power buttons do
  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup
  • Save changes and reboot

2. Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers

Outdated firmware can cause power state issues.

  • Visit HP’s support page and enter your desktop’s model number
  • Download and install:
    • Latest BIOS update
    • Chipset drivers
    • Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) if available

Be sure to install BIOS updates with only the charger and no peripherals connected.

3. Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics

  • Restart and press Esc repeatedly → F2 to launch diagnostics
  • Run System Test → Extensive Test
  • If any component fails, note the error code—it may indicate a deeper issue

4. Check for Windows Errors

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  • Run:
    sfc /scannow
  • and then:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

These commands repair corrupted system files that can interfere with shutdown.

5. Clean Boot Test

  • Press Win + R, type msconfig
  • Under Services, check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all
  • Under Startup, click Open Task Manager and disable all startup items
  • Reboot and test shutdown

If it shuts down cleanly, a third-party app or driver is likely causing the freeze.

6. Check Event Viewer Logs

  • Press Win + X → Event Viewer
  • Go to Windows Logs → System
  • Look for critical errors or warnings around shutdown time

If the issue persists after all this, it may be worth invoking HP warranty support—especially since the unit is brand new. Let me know how it goes.
