Hi @AlexMackay,
Welcome to the HP support forums. I reviewed the post about the computer making a humming noise and having a black screen. I will be glad to assist you here. Commendable job on diagnosing the issue from your end. Kudos to you for that.
- For better clarity and to assist you correctly, please let me know the complete model# of the computer.
- Did this happen after a power outage or surge?
- Did you hook it up to an external TV via an HDMI cable and check if there is a display on the TV?
It definitely looks like a hardware issue with the computer.
You could also contact Hp phone support to get the computer serviced or repaired by following these steps:
HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://hp.care/2r9wSvP
- Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.
- Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.
- Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.
- Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.
They will be happy to assist you immediately. If the unit is under warranty repair services is taken care of by the manufacturer’s warranty.
Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.
Take care and have a blessed week ahead. 🙂
Cheers!

Thank you, it's a Pavillion 23 which is about 3 years old and had been working normally, switched off at end of session and black sceened when switched on next day! Hum I assume is hard drive or fan running not UK 60Hz. I had hoped a few key board strokes might do the trick but I suspect it's terminal and will need back off and hopefully not new screen!

what you find can be many things,
1: never serviced? they pack in lint inside and must be cleaned or they all fail.
2: spilled drinks, can be super bad with CRT monitor.. no monitors stated. so....
even a cricket hiding inside, somewhere, like the montors base stand,
mine here in texas buzz or hum.

Hi @AlexMackay,
I reviewed the post. Thanks for replying back. You've done just great. Kudos to you on that score. :). I would honestly suggest that you contact a local technician to figure out what is exactly wrong with the computer and try and get it repaired. There could be a host of things that could be talked about, but to pinpoint the exact problem The computer needs to be opened up by a qualified technician.
I am keeping your best interest in mind by suggesting this as any amount of discussion in the support forums will not correct the situation as it needs to be diagnosed correctly as to what is wrong with the machine.
Take care and do have a blessed year ahead. I hope the computer gets repaired and stays healthy for a long time. 🙂
