Hi @Robert427,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

A completely blank screen can feel scary, like your HP laptop has suddenly gone quiet, with no light, no picture, just an empty dark space staring back at you. You did the right thing by reaching out. Let’s gently walk through the steps together and wake your laptop up again.

I’ll keep things simple and safe; nothing here will harm your device.

STEP 1: Check for signs of life

Look closely at your laptop:

👉 Do you see any of these?

  • Keyboard lights (Caps Lock, Num Lock)
  • Power light glowing
  • Fan sound
  • The screen backlight is faintly glowing

If the laptop “feels alive” but the screen is black, that tells us the display isn’t turning on.

If everything is silent, we diagnose differently. Just tell me.

STEP 2: Perform an HP Hard Reset

This wakes the system when it’s stuck in a frozen black‑screen state.

If your laptop has a non‑removable battery (most HP models):

  1. Turn the laptop OFF
  2. Unplug the power adapter
  3. Press & hold the Power button for 15 seconds
  4. Plug the power back in
  5. Turn it on again

You should feel a gentle vibration or hear a faint fan when it tries to start.

STEP 3: Try a Forced Display Reset

Sometimes the system starts, but the screen stays dark.

Press:

👉 Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B

As you press, you should hear a soft beep, and the screen may flicker. This means Windows is refreshing the display driver.

STEP 4: Check if the screen is actually ON but black

Take a flashlight (even a phone light):

  1. Shine it at the screen from a side angle
  2. Look closely for a faint image (desktop, login box)

If you see a ghost‑like image → your backlight has failed
(That’s a hardware issue, and I can guide you next.

STEP 5: Try an external monitor

This tells us instantly if the laptop's graphics system is alive.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
