Thanks for the reply, Banhein.

Auto-Switch is a feature on the monitor controls that switches inputs with a couple of clicks. I have two HDMI ports and one VGA port on my new monitor. I have a MBP on each of the HDMI ports and nothing on the VGA port. With Auto-Switch I could switch from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2 but not back to HDMI 1, or so I thought. It finally dawned on me that I was going from HDMI 2 to VGA where nothing was connected. So one more switch from there brought me back to HDMI 1, which is where I was trying to go. I was confused because my new monitor is a 27" replacing a 22" with the same Auto-Switch feature, though it would automatically skip the unused VGA port, so I would just flip from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2 and directly back to HDMI 1.

So, problem solved.
