Does this happen in terminal mode (CTRL-ALT-F1) or just in desktop mode (CTRL-ALT-F7) ?
What happens if you switch back and forth between terminal and back to desktop? Does that clear the problem?
Have you tried another monitor? Another cable?
Possibly the driver is switching between DVI and DP ports looking for a good signal.
If it happens in both desktop and terminal mode then install openssh or VNC server to allow access so you can debug the problem. Askubuntu is a good resource.
