Just two days ago the I noticed the screen had the smallest of flickering, and then I saw this smallest thin line of smoke, and the tell tale smell of smoke, that something, on the PCB had failed.
I've had this monitor for many year now, and it is well out of warranty, therefore I had nothing to loose opening it up.
In my case, a surface mount resistor on the Power Supply Back-light Inverter board was very black. It had gotten quite hot, because the other side of the board was discolored.
I don't feel like this was a fire hazard, as much as it smells really bad. These board are made out of fire retardant materials. I was more concerned that if I didn't take it out of service, the irregular voltage may destroy an otherwise good monitor.
I found the part at some supply houses (5E.0TM02.001 or 4H.0TM02.A00) and I'm replacing it on my own.
Hope this helps someone.

We had three go up in smoke a few month back. We replace 12 monitors purchased around the same time. We just had one more go up in smoke now. Luckily this has happened during the day and caught right away. They are all just outside of warranty. We sent two in for HP to "look" at them. They said the bulb burned out. This just doesn't smell right.

Unfortunately, I had the same issue as the others with the smoking and sizzling monitor. Luckily, I was home when it happened and was able to disconnect right away. After being bounced around from HP customer service and technical support, I decided to post here. Technical support says there is nothing they can do for me as it is not in warranty.
Is there a recall from this batch of monitors? HPLE2201w from 2011?
I realize it is out of warranty, but there should be some sort of recall. Please let me know it there is some sort of help available for me.
Thanks

Hi,
I also have had the exact same problem with one of our LE2201w.
Flickering, then smoke rising from the monitor and a terrible burning smell.
Are we able to have this monitor replaced on good will?
I understand it's out of warranty but it seems like quite a common and serious problem to me.
Cheers,
Stew

We support a number of clients and work with HP Re-sellers as most of our clients use by our recommendation of HP products. However, recently we had to swap a HP LE2201w for a client who reported it as smoking from the back right side.
The monitor was in very good condition and not wanting to throw it away despite about 4 years use from the same client we stripped it dow n to . Sure enough as has been reported here - the power board feeding the backlight inverter had started failing with smoke from a service mounted component so burnt out that it was no longer recognizable with the exception of TP804 under the board.
i would like to just change the board in the hope that this will fix the problem but dont want to risk returning it to a client despite renewing the board that the same will happen. Has anyone successfully tried a new board?
Thank you.
