When connecting my new 240 bluetooth mouse in my windows 11 desktop, the mouse shows up in the device list but I am unable to pair when clicking on it (with my existing USB wireless mouse). Error msg: try connecting your device again
I have been several times thru the power recycling, the mouse reset (with the scroll wheel and right button) following the instructions. To no avail.
My bluetooth works perfectly (went thru the troubleshooter too) and to it are connected: the existing Hama usb dongle bluetooth mouse, a pair of speakers and a web cam.
I have also tried to switch off and disconnect the existing mouse/dongle. Still cannot pair the new mouse.
I am clueless and need help.
PS: I tried to input S/N [EDITED] here (there is no typo) but your site says it is invalid.

@brunodxb, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Bluetooth Pairing Issues with the HP 240 Wireless Mouse!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
It sounds like you are experiencing pairing issues with your HP 240 Bluetooth Mouse. Here are several troubleshooting steps that might help resolve the issue:
Ensure Proper Mode:
- Verify that your mouse is in pairing mode. This often involves holding a specific button combination like the scroll wheel and right button until a LED indicator starts blinking.
Remove Existing Pairing:
- Remove the existing device entry for the 240 mouse in the Bluetooth device list on your Windows 11 system. Re-add the device, ensuring it is in pairing mode.
Update Drivers:
- Make sure your Bluetooth drivers are up to date. You can check for driver updates in Device Manager under Bluetooth.
Check for Interference:
- Ensure there is no interference from other Bluetooth devices or from objects that could block the connection between the mouse and your computer.
Bluetooth Settings:
- Check Bluetooth settings and make sure that Bluetooth is turned on. Go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices in Windows 11.
Restart Bluetooth Service:
- Restart the Bluetooth service:
- Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Find the Bluetooth Support Service, right-click, and select Restart.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hi Zoey
I had MS support remotely check my system. They tried all what you describe, restarting services etc, running some system scans in the admin console etc. Nothing wrong was found. My Win 11 Pro is up to date too.
What is to be noted is that there are a number of bluetooth devices already paired with my desktop, via USB dongle only, no direct pairing.
Also, the same mouse immediately pairs with my Win 11 laptop. So the mouse has no issue.
MS support ask me to contact HP to provide some mouse or driver firmware update. They know though that there is no driver needed for the 240 mouse.
How can the difference between laptop and desktop be explained.

@brunodxb, Thanks for getting back with those details 🌸
It’s really helpful to know that the mouse pairs instantly with your laptop — that rules out any fault with the mouse itself and points us toward the desktop environment. Since you’re using a USB Bluetooth dongle on the desktop, the hiccup could be with how that dongle is handling multiple devices or its driver/firmware.
Here are a few things you can try:
Clear the slate – Remove all paired devices from the Bluetooth list on your desktop, unplug the dongle, restart your PC, then plug it back in and try pairing the HP 240 first.
Driver refresh – In Device Manager, right-click the Bluetooth adapter > Uninstall device (check “delete driver” if available). Restart, and Windows should reinstall a fresh driver.
Different USB port – Sometimes a simple shift to a USB 2.0 port (instead of 3.0) makes the dongle behave better.
Test without the dongle – If your desktop has built-in Bluetooth, disable the dongle and try pairing directly.
Firmware check – Visit the dongle manufacturer’s website to see if they provide a firmware/driver update — many issues like this are resolved by dongle updates.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hi,
I have 2 dongles: one for a 2.4G mouse and one for my wireless keyboard. I cannot disconnect both as the keyboard is needed.
What I did was
- uninstall all bluetooth adapters (Intel)
- remove the 2.4G mouse from the device list and unplug its USB adapter (but I kept the keyboard adapter plugged in)
- then restart
to no avail.
I have run the sfc service. no corrupt file found
note: i have a wifi repeater connected to USB in 5G frequency so I believe that does not add to the 2.4G "noise" of my mouse (and my keyboard too, I dont know about that one).
am considering buying a dongle based mouse to replace the old one. too much headache unless you have any other idea to check.
