Pavilion Desktop 595-p0xxx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I just purchased a new desktop, and the connection to the internet has not been stable. Several times a day, at apparently random intervals, I will lose connectivity. The only way to restore that I have found is to run the diagnostics, which consistently find and fix the problem "The default gateway is not available."

The two consistent pieces of advice were to uninstall McAfee and update the driver. I did both of these, but the problem has not been resolved. Any advice is appreciated!

@KarlZee,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

Thank you for posting your query on this forum, it's a great place to find answers.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

I recommend you follow the below steps and check whether the issue is resolved.

Reset the TCP/IP settings on your PC:

1. Go to your start screen/menu and type CMD.

2. Right click on the command prompt icon and chose Run as administrator.

3. In the window that opens type "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" without quotes, and press enter.

4. Restart your PC and test.

It may also help to reset the winsock catalogue:

1. Go to your start screen/menu and type CMD.

2. Right click on the command prompt icon and chose Run as administrator.

3. In the window that opens type "netsh winsock reset" without quotes, and press enter.

4. Restart your PC and test.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

I tried both of these things. On the first one, I got a bunch of lines like

"Resetting XXXX, OK!"

as XXXX cycles through Global, Path, etc.

Then 4 copies of

"Resetting , OK!"

One copy of

"Resetting , failed

Access is denied."

Then 8 mope copies of

"Resetting, OK!"

and an instruction to restart to complete

The second command gave me

"Successfully rest the Winsock Catalog"

The problem has gotten worse, as far as I can tell. Rather than working for a few minutes and then failing, it connects for a couple seconds and then fails. It also has started giving me different error messages, rather than the same Default Gateway message. First it will ask me to investigate router issues (though my cell phone is connected to the same router without issues), then ask me to connect an Ethernet cable. If I skip these, it says that the Default Gateway fix failed.

@KarlZee,

It is great to have you back and your patience is greatly appreciated.

I recommend you uninstall the wireless card driver from device manager and then download and install it from the below link.

If you continue to face the issue, follow the below steps.

  1. Press Windows Key + X to open Power User Menu and select Device Manager from the list.
  2. Locate your network adapter and double click it.
  3. Once the Properties window opens, go to Power Management tab and uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Click OK to save changes.

Change the power saving mode of your wireless adapter

  1. Press Windows Key + S and enter power options. Select Power Options from the menu.
  2. When Power Options window opens locate your current plan and click Change plan settings.
  3. Now click on Change advanced power settings.
  4. Locate Wireless Adapter Settings and set it to Maximum Performance.
  5. Click Apply and OK to save changes.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!
